A worthy candidate, to be sure, but I think you've made a mistake casting your vote before we've reached even the half-way point of the year.  In the next 6.5 months someone is sure to soar to even greater heights of idiocy, and now you have no vote left.

LaughingMy vote was about to go to myself but, SuperfluousAdam made it almost a moral imperative to vote for him.

I agree the name was to offensive to be used for this site really. But i also think any comments against Muslims as someone quoted is also inappropriate and assumes they are all this way which is also wrong judgement to make, so should also be deleted as well.

Get a new lively hood. No one should have the right to act in a way that is so nasty in ur own home no matter who they are.

It says his account is closed. What was his name anyway?

So then I can have a screen name swedes_are_idiots?  (Because this guy indicates he's from Sweden)

This was the screen name.

Even if the bottom-line effect on livelihood was the only concern, an offender would still get the boot if his/her actions caused loss of income from other subscribers.  One such screen name probably wouldn't have much if any impact, but no doubt there would soon be others either in similar vein or retaliatory, and the friendly atmosphere of a web community could change pretty quickly.  And that would lose customers.  People can avoid the forums if they don't like what's discussed, but the whole point of the site is to play chess, and who wants to be matched up in games against opponents with monikers that insult them?  If you want to participate in tournaments or team matches you don't have any say about who you play, except to quit once your opponent is assigned.

Erik obviously feels that his bottom line is better served by booting juvenile morons who think it is funny to make "provocative" screenames than watching all of his customers being driven off by non paying morons. I guess if he felt that allowing chess.com to become a skinhead offshoot movement or something was good for business, he could do that too.

I'm sure any of you who play live chess late at night have seen the rampant idiocy that pops up over there from time to time.

The Orwellian "hate-speech". I can't believe how many people in the U.S. want to end free speech.

Now that the thread is unlocked, allow me to rebut.

"Freedom of Speech" as meant in the United States Constitution, refers to government action.

A private citizen, or corporation (such as oh, chess.com) has the right to regulate anything said on its property (such as, oh, a message board).

Now, if the U.S. government told Erik that he had to delete such speech, I would oppose it.

If Erik wishes to delete said speech, or any other comment he chooses to, from HIS message board, that is HIS right, as said board is HIS property.

Thank you.

Amen! I made that point the other day. I'm tired of hearing people argue that they have the right to say whatever they want regardless of the circumstances or location based on their free speech rights.

 LOL quoting the quotes

I don't know why you thought it necessary to relay the obvious. Chess.com will do what they wish in the matter. No kidding. Freedom of speech is also a constitutional right. No kidding. Why are people so insulted by what they read or see that they cheer when such things are censored? It tells more about how little foresight these weak, self-absorbed people have, that they can't imagine or don't care about the consequences of these limits on expression. I don't like that. Get rid of it. Like just pushing a button without thinking about it. My lament is for free speech, and empathy, not cowardness and power.

This is intellectual laziness. Graffitti is a form of expression, but it violates someone else's property rights. There are necessarily limits on and consequences to free expression.

I don't believe its fair to call people weak and self absorbed in this instance. This is a good site, and I hope the forums don't become a haven for religious and political wackos. And this is from someone who shares your opinion on Iraq. Maybe a chess web site isn't the most productive place to have these discussions.

I don't see how you could call this "intellectual laziness"? If you spray-paint someone's property, no matter what you painted, it's vandalism. I am nauseated by the sight of religious icons, yet I've played 3 different Jesus avatars. If someone's screen name is "Idontlikemuslims", I throw it in the same boat. I don't like it, but the owners and managers of the site will decide whether or not it stays. I see, too often, as you may as well, people throughout my life, being offended by rather harmless things and not being offended at all about very horrible things. I suspect it to be an exercise in power, rather than genuine offense, when the protests begin. It's like how people recite to you, "The customer is always right", when wanting you to be subservient to their whims. A charade, for sure. Having guts to protest when you know you're alone is admirable. To protest through popularity, to manipulate followers, is a sign of the weak-minded. It's not a strong person who would not allow someone to speak their mind. I believe a strong-minded individual would relish it, for both affinity with their own thinking, and as a point of departure verbalized as such.

superflous can be used in 3 senses, excess, not needed, irrelevence

Again you are proving my point that you just don't care about what is happening in Europe.

What is happening in Europe exactly? If, as it seems, you think that Europe is one homogenous mass, each of its constituent countries experiencing the same tensions, then maybe you're not the best person to be preaching about "what is happening in Europe".

Oh! Haven't you heard? People are being raped in Europe, but inspector SuperfluousAdam is on the case! With the help of an article he read, he was able to determine the culprits of this European menace...the MuslimsSurprised

Of course the name should be banned.  Also it doesn't matter if the muslims are doing crazy shit, that's hate speech and you shouldn't single people out on a site like this.
