How many players are on chess.com?

Last year, I calculated that there were more than 20 million players, based on my ranking as % of the total. Now there appear to be fewer than 10 million. What gives? Perhaps chess.com dropped inactive accounts?

The site is doing some back-end updates on the infrastructure that the leaderboards and rankings use so the numbers will fluctuate as that work continues and completes.
