Just for the pleasure of running away from human stupidity

There is no age to play chess and be happy.

Love and chess

Truer words were never spoken, Melitti. P.S. I was a foreign exchange student in Belgium when I was in high school. 💕 Loved, loved it!

Pegusu, why are you being mean? They're just talking. I'm going to block you (kind of threatening but not really) if you are going to be mean on this. Besides, I might text on this sometime.

Right, Old Spooky!  I don’t know what you’ve heard about me, chefmoon10, but don’t believe the rumors - I’m just a lady who stands up for myself and stands up for others who are being attacked.  And I despise any kind of cruelty! If ur still not convinced, feel free to text me and we’ll discuss ur concerns privately.  In the meantime, tell us how you were introduced to ♟ chess!

My story is like Mikekalish. Played irregularly as a kid, a bit in college, rarely as an adult, now inching into retirement and started here a little over a year ago at 71. It’s challenging and engaging and a brilliant game. Fun to progress from 568 to high of 850, accepting that such isn’t impressive to anybody else. I want to know if Mikealish made the pieces or just the board (not that the board isn’t cool). But if so name should be Michaelangeloish.

I learned chess when I was about 10. I knew my Dad enjoyed the game, and for Christmas my parents got me one of those Chess-Checkers-Backgammon sets and I asked him to teach me how to play and he did!

I learned late at 22 before that the game really did not spark any interest in me it is only later when i was on a holiday after watching some friends play that i found the game to be more interesting and beautiful i mean there are so many possibilities that i find are not present in many other games.

I would love to take credit for the pieces, but no.....those are $20 sets from Amazon. But surprisingly nice....weighted with felt and extra queens. The squares are 1-3/4" on a side, by the way, so pretty good sized board. I made it out of 1x2 strips of pine. I was hoping to find some more exotic wood, but...... Lowe's.  Couldn't find contrasting colors, so had to stain half of them.
PS.... you've been playing a year and you're only 71? I wish I had started when I was young like you. I was 76.  Oh wait, I'm still 76 since I've only been playing a few months.

To chefmoon10, glad we could clear things up. So how did u discover chess?

SquareBear99
I learned to play when I was 17. Basically my friend was shocked that I didn’t know how to play and he committed himself to teaching me (however, he enjoyed eating all my pieces before telling me all the rules lol). I ended up joining this site so I could learn how to beat him and now I’m obsessed!

SquareBear is living proof that adults can improve. Yes, she is young but is improving quickly at bullet. I would say, despite your age, all can get better at this game!

I learned I think this year. Last year I was not focused on playing. Busy last year so didn't get into chess. May 13th (this year) is when I got my membership and started learning so I am growing pretty quickly, and I've beaten my sibling more times than I would've in the past. My rating for puzzles has gotten into the 1,000's which is pretty easy (for top players) and harder (for most beginners that haven't played for long) at least for me, before that, I was under the 1,000's which means that I was trying to get my ratings higher. But starting from that point, I started getting better at chess and taking lessons on chess.com.

To TheRealjonahhill, yes, this IS a troll-free zone. There is no name-calling, no smutty talk and no ganging up on other people allowed.   Beating cancer 3 times has taught me that life is way too short for cruelty.  And now, we are not gonna waste any more time discussing trolls.  If ur here to tell about how u discovered chess, we’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for ur story, chefmoon10! I love it that so many millennials are discovering chess and making it cool . . .sorry, I meant to say cooler!❤️♟

I learned chess at six years old because my dad got exasperated with me and thought that teaching chess would teach me patience. I got reasonably good, then stopped playing chess for a long while. I recently got back into it, and with some hard work I think I have a good chance of achieving my dream of becoming a Master (2200+, not GM, because I find that Master and Grandmaster are used interchangeably for some reason).

Hello Luizguarana - you were at the brouhaha Sunday night - I remember ur name.  I like your song which is, well . . .beautiful in its way!  Another chess love ❤️ connection! I appreciate ur creativity and a tip of the hat to Sir-Mix-a-Lot!
