In my opinion you are well on your way to becoming a top blogger. You take subjects that a lot of people have trouble with and you explain them in great detail and in a way that the beginner can understand. I think thats what makes a great blogger :)

Not sure how the three are chosen on the main blog page, http://www.chess.com/blog/, but it appears that the Top Bloggers - Last 60 seconds page is based on bloggers that have recently posted blogs and have the highest number of overall reads.

The "Top Blogger" entries highlighted on the top of the blog home page are rotated automatically. Top Bloggers are a select group of trusted bloggers. One might apply to management for that status. The status has absolutely nothing to do with number of views, but having that status may increase one's exposure.
Didn't you post that before, Batgirl about a yr ago, from a blogger who claimed that chess.com was biased?

I think you have to have a lot of views. You might do this by
1) Having a lot of friends
2)Being in a bunch of groups
3) Being a really good chess player
4) Post about a controversial topic. (I posted on Ferguson. Most viewed post I ever had.)
