Players can get overconfidant and think that the game will simplistically "play itself".

Sololevelingsirjohn

Yes, but I notice alot of sus stuff, like the winner making best move every move and in seconds followed up with a great or brilliant to crush me in blitz, then you go to their profile and see that their rapid is 200 lower in elo.....Not strange at all!!🤣🤣🤣🤣

A point advantage can give me massive confidence. But also you can use that against an opponent. I have a favorite knight sacrifice i often use in bullet. That not only simplifies my side of the board. But it opens up an obnoxious defense. Too it forces the king to ruin castling. Ive only played around 9,000 games, but i do remember your issue when i started playing more heavily years ago.

What does "ahead in points" even mean? Material?

Once you're ahead, you stop calculating as carefully because you feel safe.

It is quite natural but by no means unavoidable. To win material in most cases goes hand in hand with making concessions, overextending, bringing pieces away from the defence from your king, weakening squares in your half of the board etc. Realising an advantage is much more closely related to having adequate defensive skills than people realise and understanding there are inherent weaknesses in your position as a result of having an advantage.
