I think it's common for your rating to shoot up as you learn, but also plateau at times.
At 400 though you have a lot of scope for improvement (no offence intended...it's just a game). I recommend the chess academy in chessmaster 11. My rating jumped up to about 1500 just from that.

I’m 1700 now, no offense taken 
The original post is hilarious, seeing Insert a year ago. 400 Insert is like fuzzy,braces, awkward teen phase photos. Made my day.
