Is abandoning a lost game rude?

I hope you reported them.

Not full on rude, but resignation is more graceful, sportsmanlike and respectful. Some people are overreacting (blocking? Reporting? Really?).

I just went to the forums to create a thread about this, and I see I'm not the only one. I'm playing 3 min and my last 5 opponents in a row have disconnected when they face a loss. Up till now I haven't bothered reporting as I figure it reflects more on them and their attitude, but what the heck? Am I deliberately being matched against petulant man children?? Just resign and move on to your next game.

Dalisdair

Use the wasted time to report them and send a message that you’ve done so.

Dalisdair

Don’t abandon games, resign. That’s the point. Be considerate and don’t waste your opponent’s time spitefully because you lost a game.

Last night, an opponent tried something a little different. About 2 minutes into a 10 minute game, they lost their queen to my bishop. They then ran the clock down to 90 seconds left before they executed their next move. That left them not enough to and they ended up running out the clock and I won on time. It was clear to me that the 4-5 minutes they waited after losing their queen was designed to encourage me to disconnect. After all, there's no downside, right?

Now, when I block somebody, does that mean that they won't be drawn randomly for a future match with me?

Yes, its actually against the rules to abandon a game instead of resigning.

He is a cheater. However, you shouldn't write in forums since admins might appear out of nowhere to remove what you wrote.

Consecutively 5-7 seconds consistently is crazy. I can't even do that.

Happened again.

Yesterday, I was early in a game and my internet connection went out - we were both in North America and presumably with decent network reliability. I sent a message to the other player and apologized. So, it can happen innocently.

I don't want to disparage the other player from today's "disconnection" (picture below) because I don't know for sure that it was not accidental. Not taking any chances in the future though and have blocked.

In that position, I would have a hard time believing that it was accidental.

Public accusations are not allowed, so please don't post usernames or links to games.

https://support.chess.com/article/209-how-do-i-report-someone use that to report anyone you suspect of using disallowed resources.

It takes a little bit of character to admit a defeat instead of simply leaving.
