Some GMs approach chess artistically (Karpov is extreme example).

Some GMs approach chess scientifically ( any tactician - Kasparov, Kamsky)

i think it won't be a single opinion, but my opinion it is closer to science. you can't win without calculation, only by beautiful moves. and you learn in practice and studing. beautiful moves made only if you learned chess well. as in math for example. math is beautiful for mathematicians. they know many beautiful things there. but for peoples, who doesn't know math, it isn't beautiful. i think all beautiful moves in chess is a result of great calculation. so, i think it's closer to science. and i'm far away from grandmaster to think it's beautiful science, but i can't decline it. for great physicists physics is a beautiful science. so i think for grandmasters it is the same. and, another one. computers today play not worse (maybe even better) than humans. only because of calculation. try to force computer to paint better than Michelangelo.

Yes, chess is a game (not a sport) - as I proved in a previous thread, and some members got offended!
