Yes.

Ah, so it is one of those "old men yell at the sky" type of comments. Otherwise, why even complain that kids are contained somewhere instead of everywhere?
EDIT: Most places have off-topic for off-topic reasons and most forums are primarily forums instead of chess site which want to keep players on the site, even if they write nonsense.
Also, most places I've been to don't like double or multi-posting either

Sure.
Also you might ask me if this place is so full of sh*t why don't I leave?
Mostly it's because I like chatting about chess, topics like:
https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-openings/responses-to-italian-game-for-beginners
And probably a dozen others if I looked through my past topics.

I would never ask that, forums are either for informative discussion or never ending sh*tslinging and this one gives both.
But do you really feel that those type of topics are created in serious sub forums like "game analysis" or "chess openings"? I bet it mostly "off-topic" and "general" which are inflicted. And given how moderation is working, they would be swamped 24/7 with threads and post to remove otherwise.

It's about creating a culture. Sure, right now they'd be swamped, since they've allowed so much garbage. But starting many years ago this was a decision. The forums weren't like this in the past.
And if it only affected the off topic forums it wouldn't matter, but by allowing a lot of garbage, people who make serious topics and posts leave the forums.

I can agree with you on that. But wouldn't a softer approach work better: let them play in off-topic like a sandbox but then remove threads from everywhere else and be fast at muting any user who go ever the line. And those who don't break the rules but the spirit of the rules can be reprimanded by more experienced users.
I mean, I doubt that Mr. Cool would behave any better if we had harder moderation and he didn't really write that much offensive beyond his "you're dishonest, you're a contradiction and you lack sporting sense". Being stubborn isn't something to be muted for.
EDIT: Sorry, forgot about creating culture: I think some kind of "introduce yourself and read talk with other users" type of forum where you need to post 5-10 posts before they lett you access other forums would be good. Pretty sure some sites use those and it kinda works... kinda.
The mods are dammed if they do, and dammed if they don't. When any OP creates a thread....YOU have to take care of it. If there's arguing, and name-calling, and the OP doesn't DO anything.....I can understand where numerous mods would say...."Lock It".
Can't disagree with that. But still, there should at least be an honest reason for locking it. Saying it was "out of topic" isn't true at all. There was a lot of the usual name calling and insults, but at least it stayed on topic (more than most at least).
It was repeatedly infested with trolls of the Sachin variety and the OP didn't do anything about them ....
Well said @Optimissed and @IfPatriotGames. The closure of the previous thread, after over 2,100 posts seemed an odd and poorly timed event. The thread had run off into the ditch long ago with personal attacks by only a few. The OP here and others tried to steer the discussion through intellectually honest debate. It’s unfortunate that the forum has become hijacked by attention seekers and simple minded argumentative individuals. Alas, as @NervesofButter has repeatedly reminded us all, this is the state of internet reality. Chess.com has no immunity from such boorish behaviors.
Its ran to its logical conclusion.
1. Start a post about something....anything.
2. People give an opinion.
3. People start to argue over others opinions.
4. People attack others.
5. Post gain popularity so trolls show up.
6. Trolls are fed the attention they crave.
7. Attacks intensify.
8. Post gets locked.
9. Someone will start another post on the same subject.
10. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.
Step 3 is the critical step. It's okay to argue, even if you are arguing opinions, but you can't get personal; and you have to recognize that since you are arguing opinions, the argument can't be won.
At some point you have to stop arguing and respect the other persons position.
I don't even think you have to respect the other persons opinion. I mean if their opinion is: "I think the USA should be a communist country." Uh no...but that person does have a right to an opinion. I don't have the agree with it or even like it.
Of course you don't have to agree with it, at that point I would stop engaging them in discussion. I said my peace, they said theirs, time to move on.

Welcome to the internet!
Thanks, but I'm not new here. Been posting on internet forums for years, long enough to know that you can't win arguments here and long enough to know anyone can resort to name calling.
I'm try to avoid the childish stuff, although sometimes I can't resist.

That wasn't directed at you. IT was a general "Welcome to the internet".
I hear ya. There are time when a discussion has gone so far off the rails. Its like that irresistible urge to slow down and stare at a car wreck. You wont help but you're hoping to see come carnage.
Agreed.
I'm try to avoid the childish stuff, although sometimes I can't resist.
Me too.
NervesofButter's a blackguard!! Yaaaa!!!!
OK test successful. Deadly insult that isn't on their list of banned words has been identified and will be employed!
Blackguard, pronounced "blaggard" and meaning a nasty, horrible type of person who will always do the dirty on you. Let's see what a dictionary has to say .... contemptible person, basically.
Etymology .... from the common name for the lowest rank of servants at a court or stately home.
But maybe reinforced by this:
FROM WIKI<<The Black Watch is actually offensive to some Irish nationalists because of conflicts that occurred while members of that regiment were stationed in Northern Ireland. The ONLY thing to consider with the Black Watch tartan is where you're going to wear it.>>
The Black Watch was a Scottish Lowland regiment originally formed to watch the Highlands, for any sign of an uprising. They would have been held in the deepest contempt by Highlanders and of course, thought of as the Black Guard. Yes, I think we have an insult.
