Nobody ows anybody a rematch.
Is it unethical to not accept a rematch after going 1-1?

Yes you’re a horrible person…. just kidding it’s ok to reject a challenge especially if you’re busy with other things

The complaint of the OP was that his opponent refused the second rematch.
Not that he himself refused any rematch.

Each player has the autonomy to accept or decline rematches. There might be various personal reasons, such as time constraints, fatigue or simply wanting to play a different opponent.

There's not any community ethics surrounding rematches that I'm aware of, nor are there any rules that are typically considered sportsmanlike in the same manner that there are with slips. However, it is really unsatisfying to split 1-1 and then leave.

I guess my experience with fighting games has been different. There is a running joke of the person who will lose 15 times against the same person and then leave as soon as he gets a single win. It's a way to have the last laugh and an ego thing.

I was going to say similar.... I had someone keep rematching me, and I felt bad because I kept winning. I got complacent - they were pretty bad - and I lost the 7th game. Then they wouldn't play again. Strange.
i have never understood the idea of a rematch with so many new players to play why would want a rematch from the losers side -- to get beaten again from the winners side you alreadt beat this guy why would you give a chance to get lucky --- never understood the thinking behind this at higher levels yes maybe where the pool is much smaller and playing someone of higher degree is beneficial to learning but at lower degrees i see no point -- too many others to seek out to play and experience and in my case to lose too to see how they do it

I have had several opponents ask for rematches (I'm talking about blitz and rapid games) after I beat them. Every time I lose the second game. EVERY TIME. "Every time" doesn't match up with common sense, does it?
BTW I have never had someone ask for a rematch after they BEAT me in the first game. I stopped granting rematches. They had their shot to beat me, too bad, LOL.

I have not been able to find any discussions talking about this which is quite shocking to me. ...

And you wanted the last laugh but didn't get it.
Boohoo

If you read my post you would see that I don't really care about blitz and that I even resigned when I had the time advantage. I like the idea of having a best of three or adding them as friends if we have close games.

What's shocking is that you're quoting me yet seemingly having a hard time understanding my point. Most of these threads are about rematching period. I don't think anyone is owed a rematch after the first game. I personally think it's bad manners if you ask for a rematch when you lose but don't accept one when you win against that same person.

Agreed. I think I will just have to decline all rematches from now on, sadly.

I rarely accept a rematch, I think it's often someone else playing for them ,first game they are slow and bad second game they are very fast with GM moves ........same person I don't think so !!!

It is unethical to come on the forums and whine about the fact that others won't accept a rematch. When paired with you for a rated game, they are under ONE AND ONLY ONE OBLIGATION - to complete THAT GAME AND NO MORE! Nobody is required to give you a rematch!

I beat someone pretty easily in a blitz game. They asked for a rematch and I gave it to them. Second game was pretty even but I slipped up and let my queen get pinned to my king. I ff'd even though I had a big time advantage because I felt I had gotten outplayed. I ask for the rematch and it was immediately declined.
To me, this is 100% bad manners and extremely childish. The reason I'm bringing this up is because it is SUPER common in my games. I don't care about blitz so this game didn't affect me but people like this make me not want to ever give anyone a rematch, which sucks because I don't care that much about rating and rematches could be interesting. it seems like the best call is to never give anyone a rematch so that you don't allow these aholes the opportunity to continue being shitty.
I could be wrong though, the fact that it seems so common yet no one talks about it might be proof enough that it's not a big deal. Would love to hear what y'all think.
