"God bless the Queen!"

"God save the Queen!"

I often scratch my head about these, is that a British thing ?

I mean, does it even make sense saying these ?

- it sounds like an imperative, and with an exclamation mark and the distinct lack of "please" it certainly does not even have the pretense of humility

- so if you try to order your God around, isn't he less likely to grant your wish then ?

- conversely, if you COULD order Him around, what good could a divine being possibly do that gets ordered around by the likes of you ?

- why would He possibly bless or save the british royalty of all things ? Why should He prefer them over others ? They're not especially pious, are they ? And creating yet another schism in christian churches for wholly secular reasons can't have endeared them to Him that much either, can it ?

Not that saying "God bless America!" would be any better, mind you.

Especially when saying so seems to imply both continents but the ones saying it usually think it means to bless the not always united states of large parts of north america.

No. God only saves the good.

Nice explanation about the Terms, Scottish girl.

As another brilliant Scotsman once said ....

"So once you think you're in you're out

'Cause you don't mean a single thing without

The sandbags and the gladrags

That your poor old Grandad had to sweat to buy you".

Thanks! Why is Northern Ireland also included in the UK?

It's because Northern Ireland is part of the "Acts of Union of 1707": England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland unite to make United Kingdom.

Northern Ireland did not become part of the existing arrangement until Irish independence in the nineteenth century. Before that, the whole of Ireland was under British rule. The Act Of Union, 1707, is nothing to do with it. That act united England (including Wales) and Scotland, when their two parliaments united.

If you note the extremely bad English language, I reckon you conclude that he/she is not Scottish, English, or from any English speaking country.
