It's too bad about Fiveofswords...

5ofswords is still here. He just hasn't logged in for a couple weeks.

Well, that's the same as not being here, in my view.  I never said or thought he'd been booted.  If he'd just "man up" and admit that he'd lied I'm sure all would be forgiven...

You're joking right?

On Reb's computer is a database from Convekta containing all three of my games vs GM Reshevsky.

Despite this, Reb claims in various forum posts I have never played Reshevsky.

Reb's posts can be entertaining and occasionally informative but...truthful? That's a stretch.

Hey geek, I do NOT recall ever claiming that you never played Reshevsky, care to provide the forum and post # ?  In fact I believe you probably did play him in postal or in a simul.... I doubt you ever played him in an otb classic game one on one however......

Please provide the forum(s) and post # in which I made such a claim ?  I am waiting....

                                     I AM STILL WAITING ...

He might be immune-- generally the bigger the font people use against me, the more fun I find it to ignore. Cool

Well, I will give him a few days to provide the " various forum posts " he claims I made in which I said he never played Reshevsky and if he doesnt then all will know he's simply telling a bald faced lie......

Jeez, I thought five of swords was very passionate about chess and gave really solid advice... so I think it's too bad he got run off... I thought it was undeserved.  He posted _a lot_, and although he wasn't obnoxiously arrogant IMO you could tell he thought highly of himself, and I admit I really wanted to catch him in an error just to take him down a peg...but if he made any blunders I never saw them. He said one foolish thing, I wouldn't call it a lie at all I'd call it vanity. He said something like he thought he was 2300 strength... Jeez if everyone who overestimates their strength deserves punishment I think pretty much all chess players deserve a beatdown at one point or another... we're an oddly egotistical bunch IMO. Surprised to hear 5ofswords rubbed so many people the wrong way. He seemed decent to me.

I saw a couple of inacuracies in his analyses. One time he was called on it, another time he wasn't. He did have quite an inflated opinion of  himself, but for the most part he seemed harmless.

As has already been stated in this thread, he wasn't "chased off" for lying about his playing strength, but rather his response to Reb calling him on it. He insulted him and then basically slapped him with a gauntlet. When Reb accepted the challenge, Five disappeared. That's why he's been gone.

Which thread is this?

The easy way to prove your OTB rating is to put a link to it in your profile. If anyone can be bothered checking my profile, i have put my rating and a link to the official ECF site, with my name and official rating. Nobody has ever told me i wasnt the rating i say i am :)

Be fair, who is going to argue with Charlie Bronson's tougher-looking big brother?

 It's all relative.

Uh oh watch out when you get tonydal and Reb coming at you together it's like harmonic convergence.  There will either be peaceful coexistence or bloodshed (followed by peaceful coexistence).  Tread lightly spammers, liars, trolls and fools of all stripes...

Just started following this today.  What is it with all the slander about FiveofSwords being a "liar".  Just read the original thread (D Class vs. GM? What's a guy to do?)  On April 9,  FiveofSwords says he's around 2300 in 'strength' but qualifies that, saying he doesn't ever actually go to tournaments, but plays titled friends a lot.  Then FirebrandX immediately finds out FiveofSwords' last rated tournament was six years ago when he was 1559.  So, no lies here.  He admitted he didn't go to tournaments.  Nevertheless FirebrandX has some tortured logic as to how swords could not possibly be 2300 by now.  Then there isn't a single commment on that thread for nearly two months, when NM Reb comes back to it to say he discovered Five of Swords just played in a tournament in the under 1600 group and didn't win. So two months after his original comment, FiveofSwords goes to a tournament - his first in over six years.  Why did he elect to play in the under 1600 class? Who knows, perhaps the same reason SoCal and Texas schedule cream puffs early in their schedule each season. But anyway when is the NM Reb - FiveofSwords match to be played at chess.com.  We all want to see that.

------

Wait a minute - if his rating 6 years ago was 1559 would he have to play in the under 1600 group.

Avatar of goldendog

Actually, his rank was C class, and his performance rating for his last tournament was C class as well.

It would require a tortured logic to declare he was 2300.

Avatar of spoiler_alert

OK, maybe not quite "tortured logic".  NM Reb and FiveOfSwords need to play a game here though that we can watch.  Why can't that happen.

Avatar of goldendog

Even better, let them meet otb when Reb moves back to Georgia in a few months and put a camera on the board. From there to youtube.

Avatar of spoiler_alert

I don't think either one of them would cheat.  So why not online here.  It could have been live and monitored by everyone under Live Chess 1.0, but that's long gone of course.

Avatar of Travisjw
I doubt Reb would cheat. But if five was lying about his play strength it's not that big of a stretch to him cheating a bit to keep the lie from being discovered. *shrugs* I do wish he was still around though. His attitude didn't bother me at all, and his analysis was good/useful enough.
Avatar of spoiler_alert

FYI - To overestimate or err is not synonymous with lying.  Lying generally means to intentionally deceive when you know the facts to be different than what you have portrayed.  There is no evidence of that here.  Am I splitting hairs to say lets not label the guy before 1.5 million viewers as a "liar".  And I find it incredible that you believe him to be an actual "liar" who is probably capable of cheating but you still wish he was around.

i excel at lying

Avatar of ModernCalvin

Saying you're 2300 is beyond overestimating. Either he is mentally handicapped or a liar. I'm going with the latter.

"I have many friends with are titled players and I play with them a lot." I mean, seriously, how many people on Chess.com can back up this claim? Probably only a few handfuls, i.e. IM Pruess and IM Rensch, etc.

Gotta love the guy's advice though. The best way to beat a GM is to shoot yourself in the foot and sac a piece. This way, you'll be unpredictable and win. I mean, seriously, I can see piece-sacing intensions from weaker players coming a mile a way. I'm sure the eyes of a GM are about 10x better.

Other 5ofswords favorites of mine:

So I uh in this tournament I'm playing I drew against this 1500 guy and I'm pretty bummed because I know for a fact all my moves were spectacular because the computer loved them all.

I realized [insert move] could have been a mistake, but I analyzed it and found that it contained no errors . . . (fast forward 5 turns later) . . . so I know [said move] is perfect, but I just missed this one continuation from my opponent that makes the game a likely draw, but of course no one can be expected to see such things. It is beyond the realm of human comprehension.

------

Seriously, what engine on the market will approve of moves that lead to draws against untitled players? GMs aren't afraid of engines for nothing.

Who cares what he says his rating is.
