Gotta love the guy's advice though. The best way to beat a GM is to shoot yourself in the foot and sac a piece. This way, you'll be unpredictable and win. I mean, seriously, I can see piece-sacing intensions from weaker players coming a mile a way. I'm sure the eyes of a GM are about 10x better.
There were more than one post in that thread along the lines of, "Just be awed and honored to even be in the presence of such a great player. Just count yourself priviledged to be trounced by him because that is all that could conceivably happen."
I thought Sword's response was on point as far as answering the question, "What could I do to even conceivably have a chance." It couldn't be what the D rated player normally does, playing soundly within his severly limited conception of "sound" for example. He would certainly get trounced then. So, why not do the exact opposite of what you would normally do. Throw everything but the kitchen sink at him. Or perhaps study up in advance on something bizarre like the bongcloud or something fringe that just by chance the GM might not have seen before. Or just irritate the GM by doing something bizarre with your pawns and see how he reacts. Might as well, if you're certainly going to lose playing like you normally do.
Just started following this today. What is it with all the slander about FiveofSwords being a "liar". Just read the original thread (D Class vs. GM? What's a guy to do?) On April 9, FiveofSwords says he's around 2300 in 'strength' but qualifies that, saying he doesn't ever actually go to tournaments, but plays titled friends a lot. Then FirebrandX immediately finds out FiveofSwords' last rated tournament was six years ago when he was 1559. So, no lies here. He admitted he didn't go to tournaments. Nevertheless FirebrandX has some tortured logic as to how swords could not possibly be 2300 by now. Then there isn't a single commment on that thread for nearly two months, when NM Reb comes back to it to say he discovered Five of Swords just played in a tournament in the under 1600 group and didn't win. So two months after his original comment, FiveofSwords goes to a tournament - his first in over six years. Why did he elect to play in the under 1600 class? Who knows, perhaps the same reason SoCal and Texas schedule cream puffs early in their schedule each season. But anyway when is the NM Reb - FiveofSwords match to be played at chess.com. We all want to see that.

Wait a minute - if his rating 6 years ago was 1559 would he have to play in the under 1600 group.
Your reading of the time line is incorrect AND Reb offered as I recall to play him AND 5ofBores refused And when 5oBores was confronted about the sillyness of claiming to be 2300 instead of conversing about it HE became offended AND when he was told (by me) to just relax and come clean about being wrong about his supposed paying strength he just piss on off, not to be heard of again.
