All of March I’ve been stuck at 1600... rip, any tips for me to get to 1700?

if you think being stuck at your rating for one month is "your barrier" then I'm not sure what to say.

I've been stuck at 2200 for five months now.

Most people take years.

I think my biggest thing is I feel like I can be better.... like I don’t say that to be prideful I honestly think I can be better then my rating.

Well you can't get better if you don't feel like you can get better, so you're on the right track.

Ya all talking as if gaining rating points (improvement) is the be all / end all - making it appear the single reason for playing the game is to measure success and make comparisons vs. other players.

Hard study, devotion and lots of practice will naturally lead to success in this regard. People progress from slow to fast - but everybody will reach a plateau eventually- after a few bumps or many along the way.

Point is - true excellence (ones fullest potential) is reached only after a realization is made - Chess is not about relative results to other players- but rather about the self.
If the primary motivation of playing is achieving a higher rating - then surely the experience will be fleeting and transitory. Until the game is played for it’s beauty and a sense of self accomplishment, I’ll suggest these imagined “barriers” will always be present, restricting true growth and any sense of accomplishment.

It's not as simple as  -  Win more games.

Lose less games.

Perfect example.

a fleeting mentality

We are amateurs playing a game - it’s a hobby. Too many it seems are pretending we are similar to professionals where rating points are of priority, where a rating can take on significance for pairings and prestige. Even so ... have the very top players reached their level out of concern over their rating - or is it something else?

“I can be better than my rating” ? - poster

Well ... so can everybody.
Not why I set up the board and play the game.

I am as good as I am today. That’s about it - give it my best shot. Maybe learn a thing or two and tomorrow play a tad better ... if memory serves well !

A rating serves as data for rating pools - for the pairing of equally matched opponents. Making them into status symbols only results in unnecessary barriers.

I am an older person who is rediscovering chess after not playing for 50 years. Recently I have discovered that friendly games (not rated!) OTB or with bots, for example, with someone who is very high-rated but willing to offer advice (or in the case of bits, a post-game analysis) has caused me to see things on the board I didn't see before. See if that helps. You have to be willing to lose, and learn from losing, to do this. If losing dpressds you, thus won't work for you. (BTW: if anyone notices that I haven't played any rated games here except one, that's because I've been fighting health problems and don't want to be in the position of having to abandon games! Soon I will be netter...)

Still 1600 blitz? rip

The gap between your rapid and blitz is weird... not saying that to be mean, just saying.

I’m trying to get to 2000 what things should I study? I think it is mostly the middlegame that I need to improve in, sometimes I don’t know what to do when my pieces and developed and my pawns can’t move up.

It 100% is the middle game. First of all eliminate blunders but mores then that focus on not falling into tactics such as pins sacrifices, of that sort of nature. What I used to do is go through specifically the first 15 moves of my games afterwards and fix any mistakes that I made in the first 15 moves, I would then look at the major turns in the game and look why I made a mistake and fixed those mistakes in the future. (or tried to.)

In Carlsen's Lex Fridman podcast he said there are basically two types of players at the top:  those who are good at calculating long variations and those who are good at short. Carlsen said he believes he's the only one to be very good at both (and named Nepo as someone who is better than him at short calculations).

He said when someone is good at long time controls and bad at short (like Caruana) it means they're the long variation type.

So I guess moon is good at calculation / not as good at intuition or something.
