What openings do you love/hate the most to see your opponent play?

I'm not really sure because I've seen a lot of openings (since I currently play 1. d4 but used to play 1. e4 for years). I guess one could say my experience encountering many openings means I don't really "hate" or "love" any specific opening too much.

The opening I HATED years ago was the Queen's Gambit; when I was the black side, I hated encountering this...now I love it from both sides (there is a long story behind this one and that might make a good "story" type of video in the future if I one day purchase a webcam for chess streaming). I guess the opening I hated and now love the most is the Queen's Gambit

Lol I also used to hate facing the Queen's Gambit, which is why I switched to Nf6 against d4.

xD Avoiding it is certainly one valid way of dealing with it I basically hated facing it so much, that I began using it with the white side to learn its weaknesses...and I eventually began to like the types of positions I got with white, until I finally switched to playing that opening with white.

I currently have no problems facing the Queen's Gambit opening. I 'solved' that opening issue by learning the deep theory of the Slav Defense (1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6), but have since transitioned to playing the Semi-Slav variations (including ...e6 later to establish that "pawn triangle"). There are many good options to choose against the Queen's Gambit, but most of them require a lot of theory and it is sometimes difficult to avoid sharp lines in particular variations.

Yeah, honestly I'm a bit lazy (I should probably avoid that habit...), so I don't like to learn theory unless I absolutely have to. I tried playing the Slav instead of the QGD but I didn't like the positions I was getting from it. For a short period I also played the Benko, but I felt like it's not as reliable of an opening in longer time controls.

After getting some advice from others, I eventually decided on playing the Nimzo and Bogo, which I have been enjoying so far happy.png

Do you have any advice on how to play faster? ...the answer isn't to play longer like everybody recommends, but to figure out how to be better at shorter time constraints lol.

Yeah you are correct that if you only play longer time controls, it is unlikely you'll magically feel more comfortable at shorter time controls. There are kind of two sides to this here. The first one is to just play longer time controls because you need time to "think" and not feel rushed, so that you can eventually expand your pattern recognition and indirectly (with the hope that) allow you to play fairly well under shorter time controls; this is only half the story though. The other side is to play short time controls for "practice" although realizing you'll have less accuracy.

My opinion is to generally stick with longer time controls (or at least time controls you are comfortable with) and to sprinkle in some shorter time control games. If you solely play one time control (such as some people ONLY playing classical OTB chess), then you will condition your mind to think at that pace. To avoid this, I recommend mixing up time controls occasionally.

For example, maybe your default time control is 10 min live chess on chess.com. If this is true, then play mostly 10 min games, but every now and then play some 5 min blitz so you don't condition yourself to only the 10 min time control and this variety will also train your time management skills.

If 10 min is too fast for you now, then play 15/10, 30 min, 60 min. or whatever time control you need to feel comfortable and occasionally play some games at another shorter time control.

What do you think is harder: all Transcendental Etudes or all Chopin Etudes?

Asking the big questions I see Well, not exactly worth a chess video, but since I enjoy classical music and Chopin, I'll say Chopin Etudes because I've seen some Chopin sheet music and it looks insane! It is like chicken scratch; how can anyone play this on piano? I admire those who can play musical instruments well though

Transcendental Etudes are way harder in my opinion, at least technically.

They very well might be; I don't really consider myself a musician. I have no formal training in this way and I have trouble with even chords wink.png

But expressively, does Chopin win? 🤔

Do you think you could become titled given unlimited resources? Say for the sake of the hypothetical money and work weren't an issue, gun to your head, you die in 12 months if you don't have a title do you think you would make it?

I'm asking to try to gauge what's possible given max effort. If you think that wouldn't be enough to get yourself titled then I can shut any pipe dreams for myself down now.

If you live in a good chess area yeah NN or cm / wcm would be in reach because you spend 16 hours hypothetical no burn out infinite tournaments + best of best coaching, but super expensive. My opinion

This is not an Ask Me Anything thread; those are too overdone. This is however a place where you can ask questions...let me explain. I'm relatively new to chess streaming:

YouTube where I post my videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKPXx9iOh1Q9WgwlvJVObYw

Twitch where I have occasional live streams: https://www.twitch.tv/kesetokaiba

I still have ideas for videos, but I've also had a little time to get more used to what streaming is like. I'd like to help others with chess, yet I also want a friendly and helpful chess community around it

It occurred to me, why not ask what video topics people are interested in?

No promises that I'll make a video on each question, but if anyone has a chess question they would like me to answer, then feel free to post it in this thread; I'll probably make videos out of some of these topics and for more "simple" questions, I can probably just type back an answer here.

Ask away, or feel free to share any ideas you would like to see in a chess video!

Yeah I may like to get involved with this, maybe start a little community or something, as I'm getting more involved with my Chess now, trying to make some more time for it.

Only if there's a black pawn there though!

how about doing a video about imbalances in chess...a 1 hr video or a video series of 20 mins per imbalance...

do a catchy title saying what really makes masters good at chess or how to get above 1400 etc etc

so ya thats my suggestion grin.png

Also how about doing endgame series since u r good at it ?

or make d4 full repertorie series for intermediates ?

1). At what rating did you feel like you had a good sense of board visualization? (like being able to accurately imagine positions off the board, having a good grasp of coordinates, etc.)

2). Blue-Eyes White Dragon or Red-Eyes Black Dragon?

Could I? Sure! I believe it is possible even with limited resources for me. NM is most likely because there are no norm-based criterion (simply achieve 2200+ standard USCF rating), but as with all of the titles in chess...easier said than done and even if it is possible, that doesn't mean likely or even something worth aiming for.

We must not forget how much it takes to get to that level and it is likely to be a slow improving process - not just an all-out grind in chess for a year or so. It will take many years of grinding chess to become titled (I'm sure there are few outlier exceptions). I'd estimate that most titled chess players have at least 8 years of "serious" chess experience and at least 10 years if they are an IM or GM. For perspective, all GMs and IMs COMBINED make up less than half of 1% of the world's chess players. Similarly, there are more billionaires in the world than chess Grandmasters (GMs). If you want it enough and are able and willing to work hard enough, then yes becoming titled is possible though! happy.png

This or your endgames idea is certainly possible if others have an interest in it too happy.png

1) I made a conscious effort really early on to learn chess notation and coordinates well because I realized that most books, analysis and chess discussions required some knowledge of this and I wanted to understand it. I'd say by 1200 rating or so I could name moves, coordinates and verbally call out my lines with good notation accuracy. Actually being able to "imagine positions" I'd say started around 1600 or so rating. As for visualizing entire positions which are more complicated (like blindfold chess), even now I wouldn't say I have this skill. Visualization is something I'd like to improve on. I can do basic things "blindfolded" like K+Q vs K checkmate or K + single pawn vs K endgame and checkmate, or follow opening theory really deeply into lines I know and visualize the position...but it more or less stops there for me right now and I've got no real chance at middlegame positions as well speak grin.png

2) Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Of course! My username for chess.com originally came from a Yugioh dueling site and my main deck has always been Blue-Eyes White Dragon based; I used to use BEWD deck(s) even before I watched my first Yugioh episode:
