For you right-handed people who want to know what it's like for us lefties, I recommend you read Ursula K. LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness.

There seem to be a lot of lefties here that shoot. Are lefties more inclined to get tooled up?

I generally use my mouse in the left hand but I am kind of ambidexterous so I can really use either hand.

Reminds me of a guy I once worked with called Ruffnut.  He was watching me roll a telex tape and said, "You're rolling that left-handed."  I said, "Am I?"  And he said, "You must be quadrilateral."

OK, he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but did he mean I was ambidexterous or was he calling me a square?

ceecilt

Haha you got called a square, no doubt. At least, some kind of four sided being.

We should make the group to compare the ratings of righty's vs. lefty's. And if there is a discrepency we can make some terrible documentary about left handed people being right brained. It would feature sweet MRI scans of a Righty's brain and a Lefty's brain while they play chess while some sweet narrator, possibly Morgan Freeman, shows a correlation between the brain scans and the moves being played.

Seriously, we should compare the ratings. But leave mine out, I would drag ours down I'm sure.

well we are sinister Wink

I'm another lefty... now to comment on stuff already addressed in this thread
I play OTB blitz comfortably with the clock on either side... I favor the hand that allows for the fastest move

I prefer the clock on the right for long games, so I can keep my pencil in my left hand for recording moves
when I was in scouts I fired the shotgun, rifle, and bow lefty... I have never fired a handgun
when using a mouse (I prefer laptops) I always use my left hand, and have never reversed the buttons
toothbrush, left
drinking, ambidexterous
sandwich, ambidexterous
fork and spoon - left, knife - right(eating) - ambidexterous(other tasks)
writing, left
throwing, ambidexterous

an interesting fact, half of my immediate family are lefties

in my highschool, the latin and physics teachers were all left handed

Black can even choose to use a different clock is they so choose.

The rule at the last tourney I played in, Dec 27th, said:

For tournaments with specified time controls, you should bring your own clock if you have one, or else borrow one.  Digital chess clocks with time-delay features are considered preferential equipment.  All things being equal, the player with the black pieces is allowed to choose which equipment will be used and which side the clock will be placed on, unless the tournament director otherwise determines this.

I like the clock on my left side, pen in right. Move piece, hit clock with left hand, grab pen with right, coffee with left drink and write. then slap forehead with both after blunder.

mr_obnauseous

As a member of an uberly oppressed minority group I would gladly join.  But does this mean I can only use the left side of the brain as well?

Keyif

What does it mean since I use both hands?

Are there left handed mouses (mice?) out there. It would seem daft to have a left handed group, but we are all using our right hands. Unless your using a right handed mouse in your left hand - in which case you have skills.

every mouse [the computer accessory!] is ambidextrous -- you can easily configure it to be left handed --- e.g. on a windows OS - settings for mouse...

Handedness, practice and talent in chess from ChessBase.com.

Small sample of players. "three GMs, ten IMs, thirteen FMs, thirty-nine untitled players with international rating and thirty-nine players without international rating"

"As chess is a visuo-spatial game, one could expect that it engages the brain structures primarily devoted to visuo-spatial processing. These structures tend to be located in the right hemisphere. Given the way the brain is “wired,” the right part of the brain also controls the left part of the body. Thus, one would expect that there is a larger proportion of individuals that are left-handed, or at least ambidextrous in the chess playing population than in the population at large. In our sample, 17.9% of the chessplayers were left-handed or ambidextrous. This was significantly higher than in a control sample of non-chessplayers (10.2%). However, there were no significant differences between skill levels with respect to handedness.

Interesting TadDude.  By the way, I did start a left-handed group but I need help.  I wouldn't mind having tournaments and such but I am not a great chess player.  I am getting settled this week, but if anyone wants to help me with this at some point in the near future, please let me know.

Mainline_Novelty

apparently theres a joke going around at my school that left-handed people are from the devil (confused).

bigmac30

technicly i am ambidextous i broke my left one at school so i had to learn right handed but rearly use it now

EdmondHuor

me too :)

I was originally left-handed, but my parents taught me to write with the right hand Frown. I still find my left hand stronger, and do stuffs like combing my hair, using the screwdriver with my left hand. But I write with my right hand. When I play the guitar being lefty helps me a lot on the frets!

But the clock thing I think does not matter whether it is on the right or left - it will be on the left of one player and on the right of the other, right? And we have to press the button immediately after giving the move - I do not think there is a speed difference with either hand with anybody (not more than a fraction of a sec)... and we can give the move with the hand of our choice...
