The pieces stack on each other to save space. The alternative is to put numbers next to the pieces, but stacking the pieces looks better in my opinion.

Indeed, I really like the piece-stacking. I don't have a scroll-bar next to mine, though, I think you've got the whole thing zoomed in compared to me. (Ctrl + mousewheel.)
