@bobb3: Your friend can play opponents toward the lower end of the rating spectrum for now. Perhaps opponents rated 800-850 would present a worthy challenge. If that is too high for him, then his rating will drop to an appropriate level, and he will eventually--and soon--find more opponents equal in skill.

Losing all the Time is not very Motivational for a beginner though is it.

@bobb3: He shouldn't lose very much. The rating fluctuates greatly in the beginning. The first few losses should drop his rating by several hundred points, quickly placing him with much lower-rated opponents who will be more appropriate for him. At that point, he will have a good chance of winning.
