Move quickly request by opponent?

I am relatively new to chess.com.  I came here specifically to have deep thought games aimed at OTB play.  In doing so, I developed a methodology of recording my games on my own scoresheets, logging on, getting my moves, then on any moves with ANY thought involved, I log off and analyze OTB on my own chessboard.  I then log back on and make my move ... trying to eliminate the analysis board, all of this aimed at an OTB return.

Today, I had an opponent in a 1 move in 3 days "Let's Play" game ask me if I mind moving quickly.

Has anyone ever asked you to move quickly?  What are your thoughts on moving quickly?  What are your thoughts on your opponent asking you to move quickly?

That's ridiculous.  That's why we have time limits.  Play at your own pace, don't worry about your opponent.  If he or she wants to play quickly, both live chess and 1 move per day are available.

EnoneBlue

yea people do it all the time, its rather annoying.

unixadmin

Thank you for the reply RDBhan.  I was thinking along the same line ... I just wanted to make sure that I was not missing something, and was curious if this has happened to other members.

Your opponent was unsportsman-like and in my opinion rude. You are doing the absolutely correct thing in trying to learn when playing and taking your time to make move decisions. Ignore him for this game and then block him from your list of people to play.

Good luck in the game.

whitehat

Yeah, if he wants you to move quickly he's probably trying to get you to play sloppily. Be sure to win this one, the guy sounds like a pain in the butt.

onosson

I only had it happen with one player.  It went like this:

> Move

> Move please

> MOOOOOOOVE

> move move move move

Gets annoying really quick.

TheGrobe

It's pretty rude.

I'd politely advise that my opponent try Live Chess if he's looking for a faster game and maybe even provide him with a link.  If he's still a jerk about it you can always turn of the chat and play at the pace you're comfortable with without having to hear him pestering you to play faster.

mwill

He prolly doesn't wanna have to keep making all the moves in his chess program.

LOL

I don't think there's anything wrong with the person asking, as long as it's done politely.  And you should feel completely comfortable responding that you prefer to take your time.

I would say it's only unsportsmanlike if your opponent expressed irritation or in some way implied that you shouldn't take so long.  I see no reason to get worked up (not saying you are) by a simple request that you can freely decline.

Kernicterus

Thoughts on someone asking me to play quickly?  Hm...I generally laugh and type "ok" and continue as if they'd said nothing at all.

I can understand some people wanting fast games because some of us aren't able to stay connected to Live Chess...but in that case, he should have specified in his game request (we can name our games) and perhaps also made it a 1 day per move game.

Jythier

I just say, "I think you're looking for 'Live Chess.'  Try that instead."

When you set the time boundaries or accept someone else's, you have to be patient. Chess is all about patience, surely.

In my games I usually always go for a seven-day limit, even though I usually move at least once a day. This is because I like having the option to take longer if i want. Accordingly, I have to accept that some opponents will steadfastly only move once every seven days. Fine.

If you've read Stefan Zweig's novella, 'Chess,' you will know a good example of someone's impatience being their downfall. It can be a psychological tool, to stretch time to the limit. If someone says 'hurry', maybe you should slow right down.

Or just destroy them.

That's usually the best plan.

In your own time.

All he is trying is to divert your attention so keep cool and disable chatting. After all who would like to talk to a mannerless person?

Believe it or not, the same thing actually happens fairly often in LIVE CHESS, too.

I accept games only, never propose the limits. I look for games with a minimum limit of 15 mins but longer is better for me and I find games of 30 to 120 mins fairly often. That's what I like, to have a few minutes to study the really SHARP positions that come up.

About once or twice a month, someone types "Can you move faster?" or something a bit more rude, like "You take too long". Whereupon, I initially reminded them that I accepted time imits that THEY PROPOSED, and from now on, maybe they should propose games of a shorter duration if they really want to play for shorter periods.

But I found that this line of discussion, completely logical as it is, never satisfies them. I think it is because THEY want the extra time if they need it, but they don't want YOU to take it when they are trying to trap you. So, more recently I have taken to simply clicking on the "Disable Chat" function without any discussion when faced with a rude opponent.

Winning or losing is secondary to simply enjoying playing at my pace within the limits.

Ticktoc.......your move

These opponents seem to be missing the fact that they get to study the position as well while your clock is running.  Your slow pace actually benefits them, should they choose to exercise their option to think on your time.

Ignore them and use your 3 days of time to think over your moves CC Chess is not a race.

Kernicterus

I once had an opponent who was like "helloooo tick tock, it's your go" and I was like "oh, it's my move? I didn't know" and then each time it was my turn I'd ask him if it was my go yet...until he just left the game.  That's a nice memory.  :)

amiraz

It happens to me quite alot in greeter games. Then I simply refer them to live chess if they want quicker time controls. I don't remember it ever happening to me in regular 3 day per move games.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Some people play pretty quickly in a 3 day game. I guess I don't see any problem with "generally moving quickly" but having the 3 day time control to protect from timeouts.

Asking at the start of the game is much different from asking the opponent at move 20 or move 25, saying "can you speed it up a little".

The way I look at it is that the player is respectfully asking if this is going to be a quick game.
