Hello, My name is Ariz Husain and I am 13 years old. These days online chess is increasing in the world, playing chess online has affected my eyes and weakened them. Tomorrow is my eye test, my parents said that if I needed to wear spectacles after the test they wouldn't allow me to play chess because they say that health is more important and my point is that chess is my passion. Isn't it unfair? Please advice me something to cheer my parents up and deal with them.

Your parents only want what is best for you, but staring at a computer screen won't actually damage or 'weaken' your eyes, though it may cause temporary symptoms like blurred vision and headaches.

YEAH THIS CASE IS ALSO WITH ME BUT THE REASON BEHIND IT IS DIFFERENT,MY PARENTS ARE STOPPING ME BECAUSE DUE TO STUDIES,I AM IN CLASS 12TH.meh

Please don't mind but your parents are right to do so. Passions and interest aside, a good health is a key to successful future. What if keep playing damage your eye sight permanently?

HawkedEkko

if your parents want you to stop playing online chess, you probably have to stop. You just have to get used to OTB chess which has arguably declined in the chess-boom era mainly due to covid

When you get your eye test, have a discussion about this with the optometrist and your parent who takes you there. The optometrist should be able to advise, offer suggestions, reduce your parents’ worries, or tell you they’re right and no more laptop chess for now. Your eyesight has to be protected.

I had my eye test, the doctor said that I needed specs but chess has nothing to do with this and online studies is the reason.

Don't say your personal information.

Don't let your parents stop you. You should always do what you want. Always follow your dreams.

Sorry about getting your name wrong.  You see, I do wear specs, though not because of looking at too much tv or computers.  Mine is just old age, as I am now 65 years old.  Again, let me say congrats and I am happy you are getting to still play chess.  I am sure you will be a much better player than I.  When I was 11 I got a guitar, and spent many years mastering that, instead of chess.  In my 30's I came back to chess, but by then I was working so many hours each day I didn't improve much beyond 1500 USCF rating.  Then I had to go away from the game, again due to work, and only recently came back to it in retirement.  I think if you are as passionate as you say, even if you must leave it for a time at some point in your life, you will always love it.  Maybe we can play sometime, though I think you are stronger than I already, as my game is very rusty.  Good luck Ariz, and again, congratulations.

Quite simply, it is nonsense to suggest that chess will harm your eyes.

It's no different to using a computer or other device or reading a book in that respect.  Most people in the world require glasses to correct imperfections of vision - they happen regardless of what you do. And if you need glasses, you aren't going to stop needing them if you stop playing chess, so what is the point?

It is important to keep things in balance. A little chess is much better than too much (and probably more fun). I am sure your parents want you to put effort into your studies and that is definitely more important.

Thank you so much!

You must stop playing chess immediately. Chess is haram!

PlayingFromArizona

Ask your parents to discuss this with your eye doctor. Perhaps he/she could put them at ease that at least a certain number of hours per day at the computer (chess plus whatever else you do online) is acceptable. Good luck!

Chess it not haram, and if that is so then leave chess and close your account.

I visited an eye doctor once. The optometrist said to read the letters on the chart. I went, "A, B, C, D, E, F . . . . . " He said, "What are you doing?" I replied, "You don't want them in order?"

TheSonics

Use the most yellow and dark setting on your screen.

Like the iPhone has "Night Shift" etc... Google it if you don't get what I mean. You can do this on any laptop or device.

My computer is always set to warm colors. not just at night. This way it dosen't mess with your brain hormones and stress the eyes. There is no need for the screen to be bright. Use the minimum brightness that you can see, and warm colors.

Also try to change the excessive screen time with puzzles from chess books. Solving puzzles from a nice book is better for your calculation improvement too! Solve everything in your head then check with a board later or with stockfish but only after you finished the puzzle and have your solution written down.

Also there is nothing better than to play OTB, especially with stronger players. So find players even if they are much stronger just play with them.

Good luck
