New Game review - Chess.com badgering paying users into upgrading to diamond

Sort:
fluffytitbabbler

The new game review feature "Move Explain" sounds like fun, and it might even be slightly useful. If I was already a Diamond member, I'd be quite happy with it. However, I'm not planning any upgrade anytime soon, and what really annoys me, are the constant reminders to upgrade to diamond membership, if I want to use this new IMO, a gimmick.

As a free member, I'd have to get on with it, just like all free members have to suffer through the ads, that's the price for a free product. But I'm already paying, and chess.com promised an ad free experience with gold membership. So please REMOVE the ads form the game review tab.

Update 11 Nov 2021, big bright banner button and hints to update to diamond membership were recently removed from Game Review tab, so yeah, thanks chess.com👍

12 Nov 2021, well, it's back, so, whatever...

Even diamond members get Chess.com-related ads. However, a company can do whatever they want, so…

Chan_Fry

Agreed. Seeing the ad every time I analyze a game is already irritating after just a few tries. It makes me LESS likely to keep paying - not the effect they're going for, I'm sure.

As a gold member, I'm not aware of any chess.com products ads, unless I try to use a feature, I'm not paying for. These ones are in my face, even though I'm not trying to use the "move explain" feature. I think the company should keep the promise they gave with the membership, which was No Ads.

I sent a complaint, and everyone who finds it annoying and insulting should do the same.

@erik has posted about this on the News article about the update. So they are looking at changing that behavior

fluffytitbabbler

That's nice,  hopefully, it'll be sorted. I'm probably getting ahead of myself getting upset and creating dedicated threads😂

It should be separated, and show the upgrade option when they let me use it once a day😀

Here is a different and more effective move. Do I like am doing, check out the competition. Since being a Gold member, I have not strayed from Chess.com. However the constant noise to upgrade in the New Review has me looking at Lichess and Chess Tempo, one of which had me as a paying member in the past. happy.png

Also I am seriously looking at Decodechess which has improved since I last looked at it. Furthermore Decodechess can be had right now for $44 a year which seems like quite a bargain.

Since my Chess.com Gold expires in a few months, if the constant noise to upgrade to Diamond does not go away, I will go away.... happy.png

I'd checked out decodechess before, don't know how good it is now, but it was not something that I thought was useful for a beginner. Maybe I should give it a go, but there's plenty to learn for me without ever using engine analysis anyway. I'm assuming you were paying for Chess Tempo, since lichess is free? What's their biggest advantage over chess.com, if you don't mind shortly.

I'm looking at the chess tempo, looks interesting, what is the players base there?

I payed for Chess Tempo for a couple of years and liked it very much. I believe that Chess.com is more for the free players, noobs and casual players while Chess Tempo is more serious. This may or may not be an advantage depending how you view Chess. I decided to try Chess.com Gold for a year and have liked it also but this New Review constant begging to upgrade has given me a dim view of paying for another Gold subscription. Which is why I am looking at all options AND there are vast Chess options on the net, most of which can be tried for free. Chess website Competition is VERY good for the player that wants the very best value or bang for the $$$$..

I like chess.com Gold, hopefully, this badger will disappear, and all will be good again😂

I'll check the chess tempo, look interesting, thanks

ChessTempo is great for puzzles. The playing environment is feature-less and the playing pool strikes me as pretty weak.

I am a paying member at ChessTempo, but have not been there in months.

Yeah... I don't know how I feel about this new feature. The "advice" is extremely general and not really helpful. It might be good for newer players I am not sure though...

For anyone that is experienced "You had an advantage, but now the game is equal" or whatever... doesn't really do anything. We still like always have to figure out why certain moves are better and then evaluate the lines.

So far it is just annoying me, I just want to click on the report as usual but it does this game review instead, which takes longer to process etc.

But it's good that they are innovating and trying to do new things, I like that.

I signed up and started looking around. Seems like they have great puzzles, training tools, etc., even personalised tactics from your own games. But the user interface is terrible, the site makes an impression you're in the year 2000. Live in-game interface is pretty awful. Being spoiled by chess.com, it'll take some time to get used to😂

That website is really well done, the interface just needs some cleaning up. It's somewhat of a mess and too overbearing. But I've used most websites and I like Chess.com's interface much more. They have a really good default board. I am not into all the weird nonsense and the pieces that have some 1995 gaming texture on them or something...

I think it's a marketing gimmick trick that will create an illusion of learning. I mean I wouldn't mind having it if I already had or wanted diamond for other features, but making a selling point out of it is weak. But who knows, maybe in a few years, it will work much better and be more instructive.

In the article on today’s Grand Prix results, they used a snapshot of the new game analysis for one of the games. 🤢 🙄

Chess.com is a business. It's not a philanthropic project of some multi-billionaire who is interested in making chess more easily available to everyone worldwide. Hence, anytime a situation arises where the computer thinks you might want more or better information on some particular topic it alerts you to the possibility that more is available, for a price. I have a gold membership, am satisfied with that, and so when I see "upgrade to diamond for more" I just shrug and continue with what I was doing. If you hate to see ads that much, why are you on the internet?

That is a bit nonsensical... it's completely rational to be annoyed by ads... especially if you are a paying member.

I support the rest of your points and am fine with them being a business. It's why quality of the lessons and events and so on are higher as well as there being good support and decent enforcement of fair play and such.

I have *always* defended chesscom when people whine about things not being free. This is different. I pay to not see ads and yet I am hit with a barrage of up-sell ads when I analyze my games on every move. That simpering face of that guy telling you to upgrade is cheesy and annoying. You go through your game with the new analysis and every move is greeted with a “that’s a good move upgrade to find out how I think you could’ve made a better one” or something equivalent. It’s completely obnoxious and something I’d expect to see from Facebook, not chess.com.
