Thanks, guys! We are fixing the issue with take-backs!

Thanks.

There is something else that has changed which I think needs fixing as well.

It used to be that the user could control which colour they would play by clicking on the 'Finish v Computer' button from a position where the colour they wanted to play was the colour whose turn to move it was. e.g. If you want to play as black you click on 'Finish vs Computer' when it's black's turn to move.

This no longer works. Now it does not seem possible to control which colour you will be from the position when you click on 'Practice vs Computer'. You can 'Switch Sides' afterwards but I think the old way of controlling your starting position and colour should be restored as well.

Seconding the request.  Sure I can copy the FEN with "x color" to move, paste it into a new analysis board, THEN click 'practice vs computer'...  but that's a lot of seemingly unnecessary clicking around compared to the previous version which just recognized which side had the move in one click.  Please restore the previous functionality.

It looks like they made some change since yesterday, it now shows the best move/comment on current move again.  But still move take backs do not work, hoping the restoration of that is coming in a day or two.

I reported another take back issue weeks ago where you cant takeback after checkmate. This has not been fixed I dont think. Or is it fixed in this new Practice mode? Please fix both issues! Annoying when the computer gets an unexpected salemate or checkmate and you cant take back and try different move!!!! noone fixed this for years but its terribly annoying!

WarthogChess

Theres more than one issue. Are you fixing the issue where its picking the wrong player when starting the Practice? reported here as well:

I second this as well - it would be useful to be able to take back moves from a finished position.

Stick w Lichess until they get it fixed

I'd say that it would actually be a good practice if we could go back and make a move again in master games. Apart from that, I love it!

That site is good but way too slow.  I hope they get this one fixed, they said they would a couple days ago but still have not fixed the take-back move in practice.  They seem like they do a pretty good job with this site, so I hope they fix this pretty soon.

THANKS-- If takebacks are added in for the new Practice feature, great.  But for me I really need takebacks to be added back in "finish game against computer" .

The original "finish by computer" was absolutely perfect.  PLEASE RESTORE THE ORIGINAL FUNCTIONALITY OF "FINISH BY COMPUTER " that so many members were happy with.   Yes, you can finish a puzzle in "PRACTICE" and get to the beginning by painstakingly  clicking back, flipping the board etc.  But  "FINISH BY COMPUTER"  just needed 2 quick clicks.   Would be great if chess.com can have both "custom practice" and "finish by computer" with its original functions.

You can! The issue with take-backs should now be fixed...

Yes! It's both. It's basically the same training UI in both cases now.

This is an interesting question. After a puzzle, what does a player want to do...

A. See how the game would end after the puzzle's solution?

B. Try different moves during the puzzle?

C. Both?

Right now, the way the "Practice" links work in general (from games, puzzles, etc.) is that you end up looking at the same position in Practice that was on the board when you hit the 🎯 link in the original context. That seems like the smoothest user experience... But should that be different for Puzzles? Should you always see the beginning of the puzzle when you land in Practice?.. 🤔

WarthogChess

This blunder by chess.com actually forced them to fix some things long waiting to be fixed. You can now takeback after checkmate. So after requesting this a long time, its finally been done!

- For me, "A".  I will occasionally continue endgame position puzzles, picking up from where the puzzle's solution ends and play it out to mate.  But it does take a bit of copying/pasting to get a usable "vs computer" continuation.  If it was easier - ie, one "practice against computer" click - I would absolutely do it more often.

- My preference would be for the practice link to take you to the position post-solution, but having to play through the puzzle problem again probably couldn't hurt. happy.png

True, and yet overall I think this is a great site far more deserving of gratitude and appreciation than criticism.

NotOldManSteve

thank you chess, com for restoring move take back in "finish against computer:,  Next request-- could there be a way to force the computer to make a different move (that is, I selectively make a move for the computer) to try out a different line?
