Objectively based on statistics, other than 1. d4 and 1. e4, the next two most popular (solid) choices are either 1. c4 (English) or 1. Nf3 (Reti) and both of these openings often transpose into a 1. d4 or 1. e4 opening anyway.

What all of these moves have in common is that they contest the center.
