Opinions on etiquette (nothing to do with V-word or R-word, I promise!)

If you've just programmed a forced mate-in-five into Conditional Moves, does entering "Thanks for the game!" in the Chat box make you a jerk?

I mean, sure, you could wait till the game ended and then comment, I suppose.. but isn't the approach above better than nothing?  Smile

EternalChess

Its 50/50

Its kinda alright IF your opponent knows he gonna be mated,

but saying that out of surprise would kinda offend me (if i didnt know i was gonna be mated)

You can do conditional moves and next time you log in you say good game (if he got mated)

what's the v word?  I would consider what you describe rude.  Imagine otb if your opponent makes a mistake and doesnt see a checkmate and you say thanks for the game before playing the move.  I dont think that would be well received.  (Imagine what Nigel Short would have to say!)  This would actually be very bad as it is definitely distracting to your opponent.  If for example you have made a mistake and say 'thanks for the game' your opponent might 'buy' that it's a checkmate and play more automatically and not find a defense he might have otherwise found.

I don't think is kind of rude or being a jerk, I done it a couple of time when mate was really gonna happen but then sometime i say good game at the end is all depending really.

p.s. and it happen a few time to me but is doesn't offended me at all.

"Vacation."  :-)  Thanks for the 2 cents, all.

Maybe what I really want are Conditional Comments.  ;-)

Yes, you know.. up till very recently, I did not know that Alerts were spawned by new comments in the Chats of finished games.  As it should be, so I don't know why I assumed otherwise.

Thanks x 2.5, ck. ;)

Where are our conditional comments already?

[Edit -- Just saw your  request for the same DeepGreene.  I've got to remember:  Read first, then post.]

LOL!  I think it's extremely funny, and I have to agree with others here.  If there is an actual forced mate, and the opponent is pretty sure you aren't trying to be a jerk, go for it.

Haha, this gave me a good chuckle.  That's awesome.  Cool

On a slighter different tangent here.... I think ASKING or SUGGESTING one should resign deserves a good kick up the @$$ !

Surprised  Um...  I promised the nice people there would be no use of the R-word here.

Here is the thing.  Competition is fertile grounds for trash talking, gloating, posturing, cursing, blaming, ridiculing and many other nasty things.

It is part of the game just as much as being polite, gracious, honorable, and gestures of kindness.

There are stories of Grand Masters throwing childlike tantrums, or walking out on games when opponents make faulty sacrifices because it offends them someone could make such a poor move in their presence.

Roll with it.  Take it and give it.  It enriches the game.

I know that I would be hoping you missed something just so you looked like an ass when I squirmed out.

I don't think Alekhine peeing on the board is enriching the game (it's just staining the carpet).

Perhaps ole Alex was just particularly proud of his ... uuhhh "bishop" ?  Wink

bigpoison

Or maybe he got into a pissin' contest with his opponent.

I'd prefer nothing.
