People keep quitting games while loosing. Gotta do something.

You’re complaining about nonsense. If you’re playing a 3-day game, you don’t have to wait at all to play another game. If they run out their clock, they lose… nothing wrong with that.

So you should wait 20 minutes before you can play again because of this petty behavior? Or the player comes back 20 minutes later with the assumption your attention is elsewhere and makes a move - expecting you to time out (happened yesterday)? You're not thinking it through.

micahwchess

i agree with you... but it's just part of the game of chess.

It needn't be a part of online chess. If players were given a maximum of say 5 minutes to move in a 30 minute game, before a quick countdown to 'abandoned' status, that would be a fair compromise.

We need a karma system here like on other board games websites. Your perfect karma is 100 points, once you don't finish a game you lose 10 points, so you've got 90 now. You do it again - minus 10 points and you are left with 80. Once your karma is low other players can see it and refuse to play with you.

You didn't think this through, did you? Somebody's Internet connection drops, they lose karma? Somebody runs out of time after thinking too long about their next move, they lose karma? Maybe you should try a shorter time control if waiting 2 minutes is such a big deal for you. Or block everyone and stick to playing against the computer.

If somebody leaves the game and just lets the clock run down, that is against the sportsmanship guidelines for chess, so you can (and should) report them.

On the other hand, complaining in a forum thread does nothing.

People might just realize they are in a terrible position?

Unfortunately, reporting it to Chess.com support also does nothing.

Score one for Captain Obvious. The sporting thing to do is to resign if you don't wish to play on, not to disrespect the game or your opponent by abandoning the game or just letting a clock run down when you know you have no interest in playing on.
