NM Reb would like to give chess.com premium members a chance to play a game against a master. He will be playing simultaneously against up to 100 members in echess!

The matches will start on the same day, once we receive sufficient registrations. The time control will be 2 days per move.

(48 hours times 60) / 100 = 28 minutes 48 seconds per move. There are not very many that can play at that speed.

In a rated game Reb will not gain any ratings points for a win against a player rated less than 1200.

It is not beyond the realm of possibility some opponents may draw or win and Reb would lose ratings points.

The games are going to be unrated, from what I heard from Erik yesterday during his State of Chess.com address.

To be quite honest, no offense should be taken, but wouldn't a game against an intermediate player be of more value?  If I was an 800 player, I wouldn't know how to analyze a game versus Reb.  I know I am a skunk compared to a titled player, but does that make me bad at chess?  Titled players represent(I believe 0.01% of all people who know how to play chess.  Everyone's perceptions of what good and what bad are all individual beliefs.  My opinion, if I take a collective whole of people who play chess, I am a strong intermediate. If I am playing a titled player, I am a beginner.  I'm only basing this from chess.com's bell curve.

Wouldn't playing those who are intermediates be better than those who play move to move with a blindfold on their eyes two moves ahead?

I may be wrong but I think the point here is to give players an opportunity to play a master.  Outside of an organized event like this or a simul there's very little incentive for titled players to play games against 1200's so it's a rare opportunity, one that I'm sure many new or inexperienced players will appreciate.

Good luck Reb!

Exactly!  I barely know how the pieces move, but I was thrilled to play Rex in our one unrated match.  I've not only been destroyed over the chess board by mere patzers now, but have had my arse handed to me by a bona fide master.  I think it's pretty cool.

Go Reb--I encourage all who are eligible to play him. It will be a great learning experience and as another poster mentioned it is rare for most players below 1200 to  play a real (not "Internet") Master.

good point socket2me,

however can i sign up please.   i read that a newbie has more chance of beating a gm than an intermediate or even another gm because of the random moves.  THATS ME!!!  Laughing

The games will be unrated and even if they were rated I would get zero points for winning against sub 1200 players while risking losing around 50 or so should I lose.

I'm ineligible for this but I just wanted to say good on you to reb as this will be an excellent learning experience for those taking part.

Will there ever be an oportunity for stonger players to play in simuls.

dpruess

yes, there will be!

CoachConradAllison

do you know when?

dpruess

not planned yet in any detail, but on my agenda. so, no date yet.

Dakota_Clark

This is very upsetting that it's being limited to only <1200...

<1500 is more reasonable in my opinion.

dpruess

i'm sorry you're so upset!

Reb has volunteered to do this event, and i just think it's great for those who will be able to play in it. as you can see from the last couple comments, i will try to organize some simuls for the greater community in the future, which will hopefully turn your frown upside down. i'll try to work a bit harder and faster given these comments.
