how does the elo system work? i played a match against my friend who is 600 rating, while i am 200. i lost, and only lost 4 points, while my friend gained 100. why does he get 100 points for beating a lower elo player? there was also a game i had against someone who was also around 200 rating. this time i won, and gained 14 points while my opponent lost 100. i don’t understand what determines the amount of points you gain/lose.

The site uses Glicko not Elo.

The site uses the Glicko rating system that includes a measure of rating uncertainty called the rating deviation (RD) value. Players with few games in a pool, or gaps in play, will have higher RD values and larger rating changes after games. As more games are played that value decreases as does the magnitude of rating changes.
