Problems with the new gamemode Automate

Automate is a game with serious flaws. First of all, the games pricing system of the pieces encourages no variance in piece selection. One of the only strategies in the game is too simply keep buying queens after the required purchase of six pawns is made. In fact, it is probably the only winning strategy: buy 6 pawns and 4 queens, plus an extra pawn with the leftover point. I played multiple games of this mode and most of them boiled down to me having  two queens whereas my opponent was left with a pair of rooks or some minor pieces. Why would they price the queens at 7 in the first place? Why would the price of two bishops (eight) cost more than one queen? Who would buy a rook when they could buy a rook with diagonal capabilities for only two more points? How did the developers of this overlook such a simply flaw.

To fix this problem, they will obviously have to increase the price of some pieces or decrease the price of others, like knights, bishops, and rooks. In addition they should get rid of the six pawn requirement, and instead limit the amount of queens which one is able to buy to one or two. These changes should not be made with a random price increase/decrease. Instead, they should really analyze how to make the price values balanced and even. As well, I would find it quite interesting if they increased the amount of points which one starts off with.

Please share which aspects of this thread you agree with, and likewise, what you disagree with. If you do not know what Automate is, look for the mode under the "play" tab and you will figure it out.

Go to variants.

Play > Four Player Chess or Play > Variant (BETA) > Four Player Chess

Hmm, automate is part of the Beta format. I stay away from anything Beta . . .

As it is Beta, they should be looking for the type of input you have provided.

Good luck.  happy.png

That's not correct. It is available to beta testers, regardless of membership level.

@Redgreenorangeyellow the site has changed piece costs a few times since it rolled out. They'll likely continue to tweak based on feedback and results.

I agree that queens should be worth more and bishops should be worth less. Currently the only good pieces are queens and knights. Bishops and rooks should only be used if the opponent puts one of their queens in a vulnerable square, where it can be taken on the first move.

Knights are worth too much. I think the queen should be something like 10, rook 4, bishop 3, and knight 2, pawn 1.

Not sure about that. All knights never loses to all queens, so making queens worth more and knights less will make all knights by far the best setup.

Ahh that is right.

Agree. The point scale in the game are off. Bishops are over valued and Queens are undervalued. It only makes sense to use Knights and Queens.
I have had success with 6 pawns, 2 queens and 5 Knights.

I've had success with 4 queens, 7 pawns. Every time

calaisawesome

I have beaten 4 queens with 6 bishops 6 pawns 1 queen and 1 rook almost every time. (people have used 4 queens against me like 5 times)
