Ratings - How do get them?

Hi, I hope that this isn't too much of a stupid question, but here goes anyway! How do you get rated in Chess.com?  My rated is currently shown as unrated even though I have played and won my first game against a volunteer greeter with a rating of 1344.  A friend who introduced me to the site that all players when they join get an arbitory score of 1200 and this will then change as they win/draw/ lose games.  This does not seem to have happend to me is this because it was turn chess (three days) or do you have to play in tournaments? Your first game was unrated, so next time you play make sure it's a rated game;)

Thanks trysts, but what is a rated game?  Playing two friends already prior to my first game finishing and one of them is a rated player and one is not does this make any difference?

Yes, the two games you are playing now are rated, so you will get a rating upon completion. If you go to your game, on the right-hand side is the box for moves and chat. Click on the tab that says "details". You will see that it says "rated".
