I'm sure we could very quickly find a list of things that you think are silly but the existence of which you simply must tolerate.

Howabout Hannah Montana for starters?

Actually, I like her. I also have a choice not to listen to her or turn the station on the television. Maybe we can have cheaters tagged so that before we accept to play with them we have a choice. You see, tolerance is merely a copout for people that don't want to find solutions. Some thing we must tolerate. The weather, bad politicians and paying taxes. However, we still have choices. Buy an airconditioner or turn the heat up. Vote differently next time. As for taxes, we do just have to tolerate those or go to jail.

Use earplugs, iPod or take a private jet.

An annoying little brother.  I was one!

You're right. Family is the exception.

I don't think that's the case- it may be sometimes, but it is definitely not a universal rule. For example, when someone drunk on the street starts throwing profanities at you, do you have to respond in like kind or call the cops? (Good luck with that if you live near a college.)

No, you just realize it's not a big deal and keep walking.

My point exactly. There was a solution. Walk away. Use your power of choice. The guy was a temporary annoyance. If I have to accept that I have to play against people using chess engines then I might as well play Fritz. My choice would be to quit chess.com. Eric doesn't want me to quit so he too makes a choice, to ban cheaters.

Standing in lines at the grocery store and other public places is something we all have to tolerate in our lives. I dont know anyone who likes standing in lines for anything. On the road there are also many things most people learn to tolerate, slow drivers in the fast lane, someone cutting you off or failing to yield right away when they should, etc. I say most because there are some who dont and in their cases we hear about incidents of " road rage".  Parents often tolerate their children's music, dress, hair and other things they may not like, but they tolerate their children's choices because they love them.

But none of these things you HAVE to tolerate, it is a choice you make.

SteelWheels

Choice, yes.

Even Rationality is a matter of choice.

And some irrationalities we tend to tolerate.

But dishonesty... not here, my friend, not here.

Suggo

Makes you a better person!!???

So because of certain circumstances/consequences (eg being shot), we should tolerate these things?

Why the exaggerated punctuations "!!???"

I agree with Karl.... I think tolerance shows great strength of character...

And tons of wisdom, as well.

Suggo

I can't agree with any of you on that one!

And before anyone jumps in, yes I tolerate things in my life, but I do not believe it makes me or anyone else a better person.  Now if you want to talk about the reasoning behind the tolerance, then maybe, just maybe there is something in that.  But just the act of tolerance is in no way an indication of strength of character or makes anyone a better person.

Suggo

Ok, let me ask you this.

Many people in many areas tolerate crime...why do they do this?  One reason, and I am sure this is for many, is out of fear.  How does this make anyone a better person, or show a strength of character?  (more lack of character if you ask me)

Wow.

You manage to contrive anything and everything thrown at you. Let's look at the the reverse definition. Intolerance. I bet is a much better character trait to have than this 'tolerance' crap everybody's talking about.

in⋅tol⋅er⋅ance

–noun

1. lack of toleration; unwillingness or refusal to tolerate or respect contrary opinions or beliefs, persons of different races or backgrounds, etc.
2. incapacity or indisposition to bear or endure: intolerance to heat.
3. abnormal sensitivity or allergy to a food, drug, etc.
4.

an intolerant act.

Suggo

Mastermind, I didn't say the opposite was better.  I said basing strength of character and being a better person on someone showing tolerance was a false indicator, and that the underlying reason for such action should be looked at.

Sorry to actually think about something past the shallow level you seem to like to keep things.
