Seeking Advice on Improving Chess Without a Coach

I started learning chess last year and my current rating is around 1400. I’m unable to afford a coach at the moment. Could you recommend which books I should read to improve? Also, should I start playing classical (longer time control) games? I notice that I can spot tactics in online games, but during over-the-board (OTB) play, I struggle to find good moves. Would it be a good idea to start playing OTB games now?
