Shot down
Moderation is good, but it can get absurd. I was muted once for making a marriage joke, which someone interpreted as me hating women.....really?
I once got muted for writing the word "knight" in a live game.
If anyone can top that for the title of most ridiculous mute, I'll be very impressed.
Yeah, actually it was pretty annoying that those two posts got to be the last ones, being such nonsense...
Yes, @batgirl, it is absurd. Not only racists are tolerated in this site, NAZI accounts and clubs too.
I had reported and I had asked people to report two NAZI clubs here in chess.com that you can see in this list, they are the ones with swasticas:
https://www.chess.com/clubs/search?club_search%5Bphrase%5D=Socialist
Chess.com did not take any measure about it and the clubs remain free.
I know that in USA it is allowed to express any opinion and that there even exist a NAZI party!!
But in Brazil the law forbid the existance of such organizations, and the NAZI public propaganda is a crime!!
As chess.com has many Brazilians users it should respect that norm or at least take an action about @forajudeu, the owner of the Brazilian NAZI club, which nickname means "jude out"!!
Never again! No pasarán!
I don't know how it is now but when I was a moderator, Nazism / Hitlerism in any club, forum, profile, text or image would be shut down as quickly as possible. We would even actively search them out. Maybe things have changed.
Things have changed indeed. Simaginfan's latest post about Spassky has 230 views or so, and today's post about who will lose more weight in the upcoming World Championship Match has over 2,300.....
Gossip over substance. Sports before beauty.
I personally find the current scoring system quite archaic and medieval. If computers can really evaluate any position accurately, they should also be able to evaluate my performance in a chess game. We need a different scoring system beyond 1-0, 0-1 and 1/2-1/2. Time for change.
We are stuck in the "I beat you, you beat me" mentality. Really? Does the ego have anything to do with it?
White was more accurate to the end of the game. Chess is very mathematical- definitely a mathematical element runs strongly through it. That is why computers- glorified calculators- can "play" chess so well.
Well, if it is so mathematical, why do we let our ego get into it?
Nobody "beats" anybody. To beat somebody means to physically hit. We use old, antiquated metaphors to which our ego is still used to. It is the old mindset.
Time for Bronstein and Gufeld's view to dominate. The winner of the tournament is the one who plays the most beautiful game (Gufeld). The "opponent" is really a partner in creating a work of art (Bronstein).
My apologies for the digression.
I see now that his/her account is closed. But this symbol beside the nickname indicates that he/she left the site. Chess.com did not take any action against him/her.
Thank you for the advice. But in the past, I contacted a staff member about another issue, and he told me to e-mail the chess.com support...
Also, when chess.com does make a move to ban someone we have to search for the person to know about, because the staff does not tell what action did they take nor against whom did they made the move. Chess.com only sends a generic message telling that it took measures to protect the fair play and the healthy environment on the site.
You're right. I wasn't paying close enough attention. I wonder if he was muted. Many times when people are muted, especially trolls, the close that account and open another one. Do you know if the Brazilian Nazi club shut down?
If I feel some immediate action must be taken, I'll message someone and if, after a short time, no action is taken, I'll message someone else, then someone else, until I climb the ladder to @erik. I don't mind lighting fires under people.

Discussing racism isn't racism and isn't objectionable.
There's a line between discussing racism and outright bringing to the forefront ideas already left behind or outright absurd, like the genetics one. All was missing was an advocate for phrenology in the mix
The real absurdity might lie in the failure to consider different ideas, even if on the surface they, in all probability, lack substantiation. If I don't believe something, that doesn't make it untrue but if I examine it despite my disbelief, I might discover something I never considered before.
My apologies for the digression.
Digress all you want.
Thanks. You are very kind.

Not sure if that is the reason why my enthusiasm for posting is waning.....
or Welcome to the New Wild West
I haven't a thing against chess.com locking threads. I even have a history of having had my own threads locked, starting with this one @Erik locked in April, 2008. In fact I think more threads should be locked -- for real reasons (I have this obviously absurd notion that I can't shake of this being a chess site).
But sometimes it's interesting to explore the reasons and purposes behind a thread being locked -- something that may in itself become victim of the Lock -- to understand how things work.
I was slightly involved in and following a thread that was locked explicitly for not following the ToS:
(clicking image takes you to the thread)
Having read every one of the 274 comments, I'm having trouble figuring out which Terms of Service were broken. There was a debate, of course but not an argument. There were a few silly postings but the entire thread pretty much stayed on topic. As best I remember, there was even only one stupid worn-out meme. There was no name-calling, no bad language, no spamming. Even people who disagreed were for the most part respectful, outside of a few little jabs here and there. The discussion topic (discussing it, not practicing it) isn't in any way disallowed by the ToS.
As stated, I have absolutely no problem with a thread being locked for whatever reasons it's deemed necessary. I'm just curious about the proffered reason which makes no sense to me.
What should the commenters have done differently? What should we have learned from this?
Was the thread shot down on the street in a fair fight or was it an innocent bystander?
Welcome to the New West.
Yeah, I noticed that too.
Some of the newer mods aren't bright people, but what can you do shrug*
In their heart, they probably see this as a place for babies, which is why serious conversations are considered dangerous (better to err on the side of locking) while topics that spam childish nonsense are allowed.

This site is geared towards and appeals to people who regard Twitter as great literature and respond to anything over 30 words with TL: DR. There are, of course people with a true interest in quality, but it's a niche crowd. Chess.com itself doesn't care about your, mine or anyone's blogs other than the ones they control. Chess.com doesn't care about the forums (where I now choose to post chess content --with very few views). Chess.com only cares about riding the wave of here-today-gone-tomorrow players who drive the numbers and see chess as some sort of video game. Writing, studying, learning, sharing must be a passion because, since the playback pretty slim, the real reward must be in going through the process with the hope that someone may take something from it or at least be inspired. I'll have to say that you have inspired people... unfortunately, people who may most benefit from that inspiration are directed towards videos, streamers and such ponderous questions uch as how many GMs can sit on the head of an absolute pin.

This artist is an inspiration.....
I don't recall anyone saying racism doesn't exist.
