Site feature requests!

I think some more features could be added the the member profiles...

1. The ability to use some limited HTML in the "About Me" section (like bold and italic text, colored text, and maybe the ability to separate the text into paragraphs.. for example, mine is a huge block of text that I'd really prefer to be split up into several paragraphs :)

2. Also, maybe something where you could put in your AIM/Yahoo/MSN messenger names, and allow people to contact you via one of those services if you like.

I just thought I'd throw those ideas out into the open.. I'd like to see them implemented, and maybe someone else would too :)

good ideas. we're working on some more personalization tools...

Some forums give it's members 'titles' like 'New Member', 'Top Contributor', etc, based on how many posts you have. Maybe we could have something similar, except it'd be based on how many points you have.

yeah... we're working on what that will look like :) good one though! also, we have a REALLY cool feature coming out tomorrow (NOT play though... :( )

I really can't imagine how popular this site is going to be once online play is implemented. Online chess playing + active forum community + 'MySpace-like' profiles equals a winner.

I also wanted to suggest possibly adding some kind of feature where you can 'explore/browse' a large database of grandmaster and historical games. Something similar to another popular site that I am sure you're well aware of. :)

andy, unfortunately the constraints are not our imaginations, but our headcount and resources ;)

As a developer I fully appreciate where you guys are coming from.  I do however have a couple of site "feature" requests.

 1.  Instead of a forum for posting tournaments, have a full feature which will be sort of like "Register your tournament, event or club".

1.1 Tournaments should capture date, time, place, classes, contact info, prizes etc.

1.2 Events can be festivals, free or paid classes, regular meetups (without a club) etc

1.3  Clubs are organizations which can be state, local, school or community based - All searchable of course.

2.  The other thing I would like to see is a forum category of Scholastic Chess for both players and coaches or wannabe players or coaches.  This one should be easy.

I'd be glad to write up requirements for 1.1 through 1.3 above if you want and email it to you guys for your consideration.

Vtan! Thank you so much for caring!

Have you seen our events section? You can add multiple kinds of events (tournaments, festivals, meetups, etc) - see here: http://www.chess.com/event/post.html

Also, we HAVE a clubs directory here: http://www.chess.com/clubs where you can do what you mentioned :)

I guess the problem is making sure people can find these things!?!?!

Finally, yes, we should add a forum for scholastic chess players and coaches!

Thank you SO much!

Hah! So there is was.  My eyes are going.  My brain was so used to expecting something like EVENTS->Post New Event at the top menu that it never even thought to look at the right side.  I'll leave design up to you guys - I know the compromises and discussions on design can be a real pain without a user adding to it.

It might be useful for chess.com members that are under 18, if their ages were displayed next to their name when they make contributions.   I know that it's possible to look up ages by looking at someone's profile (if they have given the information), but that takes time and it would be helpful to see at a glance is someone is a junior player.

yes. we're going to try and figure out a way to more "qualify" people on the site so you know kinda who they are. once chess ratings come out that will help a little ;)

Something I have looked for on the web in vain is what I can best describe as an 'ebay for chess'.  Yes, I know that ebay sells all sorts of chess products, but because they are a general auction site, there is no easy way to narrow your search by category in the way a chess player would e.g. chess opening books, endgame books for beginners etc.

I think there could be a real market for this sort of service.  It would be great to be able to buy and sell chess books through a chess site, which caters for the needs of chess players.

If nothing else, it would stop me getting search results listing music from the 'chess' record label (when I get when search on ebay!) Laughing

Itty bitty request, it's probably just me being  pernickety.

But when you're playing an email game would it be possible that when you press 'Submit Move' it also submits the message you have typed in too? I know it's just an extra click away, but I'm a lazy person.

If it's any more than a few minutes work forget about it. :)

Jordan: yeah, that's not going to happen soon :) but we did get some improvements in chat done that will come out soon!

I'll throw a request out there.

I'd like to be able to highlight squares of interest in the "Insert position or game" option of forum posts.  Maybe having something like a "click on a square to highlight it" or "highlight all threats" or something along those lines option.  It would be helpful when annotating games.   It would also be nice in the puzzles section so that when people click "Help" instead of giving the user the move, it highlights the piece that needs to be moved (allowing the user to know what to move, but not where to move it)

I had a friend who plays on another chess site looking over your site and he mentioned that he didn't see anything about online tournaments (and the ability for players to start their own tournaments) or chess teams for here, do we have those, and if not, will we?
Avatar of erik
Tournaments and teams are in the works ;)
