Some ideas for site.

Here are some ideas for features i would like to see.

1. Analysis board opinion on the screen when looking at the game, instead of having to go to the tab labeled moves first. This feature is on the Face book game but not on the site. It is some thing simple but helpful none the less.

2. A random opening option in the advanced options for creating a new game on the online chess part. I like surprise and spontaneity, i  also like trying new openings and defenses. Again I don’t know how many people would use this other than me, but Im sure it wouldn’t be hard to add.

3. a couple of variants wouldn’t hurt the site. Maybe like fisher random chess or fisher chess 2000. Suicide or losers chess and crazy house. I bet this gets suggested often but im new to the site and needed a third suggestion for my list of suggestions. What?

Thanks

4. an option for paid members to leave the ads on this site. Hey, i don't mind ads so its just more revenue for chess.com (i bet since this one makes chess.com money it will be the only one implemented).

5. Have the pgn files include the name of the opening used and the openings ECO code. Would make it easier for database management.

6. Have wins on time seperated into a different category. So as not to pollute the win percentage.

New trophies!

MsCloyescapade

better yet personalized trophies!

erik

1. agreed. we're re-thinking the interface.

2. probably not.

3. in the distant future.

4. just go to www.chess.com/membership.html and signup - all ads are gone ;)

5. agreed.

6. doesn't that cause perverse incentives for the loser?

7. we add trophies all of the time.

8. interesting!

MsCloyescapade

More like this . The way it is organized now but like this.

Wins by resignations or checkmates.(n%)

Losses(n%)

Draws(n%)

Wins on time(n%)

Mainly because alot of these games won on time are from 1 or 2 moves.

Even add the extra field of Losses on time(n%)

For #4, he actually wants ads in order to help chess.com. He wants it to be an option.

People will disconnect or let time run out more often if it appears in separate categories. That way, when someone views their profile, they'll think that a lot of the losses are really undeserved. It caused lot of damage to Yahoo! Chess and uChess among others. Although, I suppose there's no problem if it's not publicly visible. How about this: Have the PGN mention time forfeit or forfeit by disconnection. That way you can sort it in your database program. I think several chess sites do this in { } after the result.

To get the gist of your feedback, how about:

#9: Have games that are rated but do not affect rating (aborts, and early disconnects, time wins or resignations) removed from the game history. I've got several of them and they're just clutter that doesn't help anyone.

Moreover, I noticed that the abort button disappears quickly but a disconnection doesn't affect rating after more moves. For consistency, the abort should be visible for as long as disconnect (or other typically losing situations) doesn't affect rating. This avoids situations where one player lets his time expire after the first two moves and the other is afraid to quit because of rating, when in fact no rating is changed.

BTW: Erik, out of curiosity, do you have a big file where you store all these suggestions and bug reports? Or even better, something equivalent to Bugzilla or Launchpad?

There are plenty of ways to mess up in ten moves and wins on time are valid (they might even be in objectively won positions). Have you considered my proposal?

MsCloyescapade

I wanna play bughouse Erik!!!

Mainly so I can figure out what it is...

I think six wouldn't work because it would incentivate some people to lose on time when they are already losing.

Anyway, I'd really like some fisher chess on live chess!

4.  I also would like to be able to turn adverts on & off.  I suggested it a while ago - c'mon Erik, we wanna see those annoying flashing pop ups :-)

No - really, I'd just be interested to see them occasionally.

6. I disagree with this. i have an opponent who i am crushing in a game ( i have a queen and a rook he has blocked pawns. ... it is well past his turn to make a move, so i should just claim the win on time, but i have mate in like 2 moves otherwise.

so if rating is not effected by time outs then that is a way out of losing a game and well. i deserved that win.

TheGrobe

For #1, I'm convinced that there's a way to combine the main game screen, the analysis board and the conditional moves interface into one board (i.e. the main one) that's always at the ready.

Sorry for the confusion. My intended meaning was to have those games that are won on time be classified as a seperate percentage. I never said the games should not be rated. I am more concerned with getting the games where somebody starts a game, but only makes a couple of moves, then lets the time expire. The ratings in those games do not change, and should be classified as unrated games. I am not referring to games that have been played out.
