Song titles.... In a chess world.

I heard the one night in bangkok song in a friend's car yesterday, I didn't know except the satallite radio showed the title of the song right before my friend tried to change the station and I made them change it back. I told them that I never heard the song and wanted to hear it because I was told it was about chess :P my pal said "now if you know the name of the band, then you're really good" (we have this trivia type rivalry i guess) and I said "Murray Head, but I don't even know who that is"
thanks lol

Murrey Head sang the role of Judas Iscariot on the original concept album version of "Jesus Christ Superstar". Lyrics for JCS were by (Sir) Tim Rice who also wrote the lyrics for "Chess" and "Evita" and several other productions. The music for "Chess" was by the two male members of ABBA. Murrey Head's character "the American" is loosely based on Bobby Fischer. He is in Bangkok for a big chess tournament where he tries to blackmail "the Russian" who is loosely based on Victor Kortchnoi. The whole concept of the "Chess" musical was inspired by (what else but) the 1972 cold war match between Fischer and Spassky. The song "Pity the Child" offers a plausible insight into Bobby Fischer's psyche (and one of the best guitar solos ever!).

Wormrose .......I adore the "Jesus Christ Superstar" songs
I wasn't feeling the One Night In Bangkok song/style very much (particularly Murray Head's voice) from my first listen, yet I'm becoming more curious about "Chess" if it is on video/dvd I'll have to pick it up and check it out soon.

I have to confess it is still one of my favorites. It's two CD's and as far as I know it's still available. I love Florence's song "Nobody's on Nobody's Side". There are many good songs and the story is not so bad. (A lot of selfish characters tho.) There have been several recorded versions but the original is the best.

Here is one of my favorites from the musical Chess, I Know Him So Well :
