Square colors

Dark squares vs light squares is one of the main components of chess that players look for when visualizing moves and strategies. Bishops can only travel on one color. Knights move from one color to the opposite color every time.  This is an important part of the game, which is why the game is played on a two color board.

Thus, in playing games online here, I find it disconcerting that the latest moves are highlighted in such a way that the color of the highlighted squares are lost. Sure, you can easily look at the squares around the highlighted one to tell what color it is. But it slows down the thought process of looking at a bishop and instinctively knowing if it's a light squared or dark squared bishop. I have to stop and think about it every single time, when there are far more important things that I should be thinking about when playing my games.

This is something that should be instinctive for any chess player, and the fact that the graphics of this site get in the way of that not only hurts players like me, for whom it is already instinctive to think in terms of light and dark squares, but I'd say it hurts the development of newer players even more, since they're supposed to be developing those instincts as they play.

Is there any way the highlighing of the last move can be changed so that the colors of the squares aren't lost in translation?

This is something that bothers me as well. I too would like to see an option to disable the last move highlight. Thanks!

That is already possible under your chess settings:  My Online Chess -> Settings -> Move Preferences -> Move Highlights.

Arghhh! How did I miss that? Now I am embarrassed. Well, thank you!
