I remember following the tournaments with my best chess playing buddies even though we were across the country. Thanks for the post Batgirl. Were you an avid player/fan back then?

I should read this book.

That's the English translation of Roshal's book. It really a great tournament book.

Started it last night, reading until my wife turned on Hulu for a few episodes of Only Murders in the Building. The book has been gathering dust on my shelf quite some time.

Huge amount of work. A big thank you for that. Karpov's attempts to say that Korchnoi wasn't avoided by the Soviet authorities - in whatever way you choose to term it - raises a bit of a smile🤣. Chess wise, one of the most recent interesting tournaments of that period - Tal's result was a pleasant surprise.

i hope it brought back some good memories.

As Paul Simon wrote, "Preserve your memories/ They're all that's left you."

During this tournament I was just hoping I'd get into second grade... and I did!

Oddly, it's seldom brought up unlike many others.

I have no idea what any of that means, but I do know, despite the sometimes sketchy phasing, Roshal's humor, warmness and enthusiasm overcomes any shortcomings.

Arbiter to Clark Kent:  You here for the Super Tournament!?

Clark Kent visibly sweating:  "The wha . . . the wha . . . heck no!!  I'm just here for the normal guy's tournament; yep the good ole normal, regular fellow's open.  Say," changing the subject, "do you know of any good place to eat?"   Arbiter:  "Sure in the ballroom right over there they're having a lunch with soup or salad."

"I don't know about all that 'super salad' business; just a regular salad for a normal regular guy."

I had used up my 5 posts responding to various commenters. (Although the day before yesterday, I saw someone post spam about 10-15 times in a row -- so I'm assuming spam is perfectly OK but answering someone's comment is somehow necessary to prevent).

Yes, it was nice to see Tal playing up to his old standards.  He and Karpov worked together during their individual adjournments.

It means that your article offered information about a book on my shelf that inspired me to start reading it, but that my reading was cut short by a television show that a friend has been raving about.

I'm at the Tal interview now.

Did you finish the Tal and Karpov interviews?

Do you agree with my assessment of the tournament book?
