Hello ! Have you ever been on a tilt ? Are you on a tilt ? If any of these answers is yes, this post is suitable for you.

Firstly, a tilt is a condition in which your rating goes significantly.

Here are some things to do on a tilt:

  • STOP ! Don't play any more games ! Don't go and lose more games. You need a break. Don't play chess for around a week. You may watch GM games, take chess.com lessons, watch commentary of live GM tournaments or watch streams. Just don't play yourself.
  • Learn a new opening like the Scotch Game, Italian Game, Ruy Lopez, Queen's gambit, London system, English Opening or many more. I won't recommend openings like the Bird. Even if you do and your opponent plays '1. ..d4' as a reply, just NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER play '2. g4'. grin.png.

The break will work for you. It has for many of my friends. After you learn new openings, your rating will go down a bit more but after you get practice, it will go up like a rocket.

If you liked this post or it helped you, please react with a thumbup.png. If not react with a thumbdown.png. If you have any question, please feel free to ask it ! If any improvements are needed, do the same thing !

Thank you !

Main reasons of tilting are;

- playing chess only for gaining rating points (seeing chess as a mmorpg game) hoarding points, levelling up etc.

- not realizing chess is consisted in parts;

 + studying and learning new ideas

 + playing and trying (therefore consuming) them

Not studying anything, keep consuming everything at hand, afraiding to lose and not trying anything new yet expecting to go up and up..

Results in infamous 'tilt'..

True.

Totally agree. I’ve found that if I sense losses are mounting then I dramatically slow down the rate of play rather than stopping completely seems to work for me too. I slow to one game a day and strictly keep to that. And do the bare minimum on any open daily games. And agree with the OP too with watching other content, or for me even playing fog of war. Then once a win or two gets under my belt I slowly play a bit more.

and remember it’s just a game and we play for fun.

Tilting is a made up concept to make you think you are not playing well. This is similar to a house in a casino.

"Mathematically, the house advantage is a measure of how much the house (the casino) expects to win, expressed as a percentage of the player's wager. For example, in a game with a 5% house advantage, the casino expects to win an average of $5 per $100 wagered." - https://www.vegashowto.com/house-advantage

Right now my rating is ~1400 on this account. I have been in the 800s before on other accounts and couldn't win. What happens when the casino spots someone winning a lot?

They up the difficulty. And what happens if you try to sandbag? They up the difficulty. And what happens when you play these bots? They play relative to your rating. Someone recently posted a bogus game against a 1600 bot but their rating was below 1000 and the bot played like an under 1000 player.

You can set the accuracy level to whatever you want. You can manipulate the opponent's level to be slightly higher or lower than the person playing them. Then you get people saying, "Oh the bots are not as strong as you think", which is partly true. If you learn the tricks the Nelson bot lays out for example you can never get fooled again.

You can also program these bots to play with piece advantage (handicapped). If I came on to this site with a consistent rating of 1300 or 1500 or 1200 1100 then I might put more credence on these ratings (which are based on wins and losses). But just as much as we can't prove what I am stating here, we also can't prove we are playing legit humans on the other side.

Get a group of people you can communicate with, talk to them. Establish the identity, then see if this tilting happens. But don't buy into it based on only "stranger" data that you can't vet.
