I just used the Google to find out about Noah's Ark (since I just saw the film), and found out that the actual Noah's Ark not only existed, but was discovered in 1959 in Eastern Turkey!

Thanks, Google!

Maybe in that case you really would have saved time asking a question, because einstein99 would probably have informed you in great detail that the ark exists.

Feel free to ignore Ubik42 when he googles and comes up with http://www.csun.edu/~vcgeo005/bogus.html  instead.

In terms of quality of information I would say that it varies widely between the three.

The great thing is that you are not looking for the source that has the best average information, but the one that has the best best information. This is what makes googling "better".

Said otherwise, if you can choose between a personal library with 1000 books on various subjects, and the Babel tower library where all books ever written are present, including 99.9% Babylonian porn and political flamewars, Babel is still your choice if you are able to find the relevant content - which of course needs some critical thinking.

The OP does have a point. 1 in 79 doctors claim the "google-eye syndrome" could be related to excess googling and therefore recommends asking your question on a forum.

I would assume they mean just what they say, and it doesnt matter whether they know the answer or not. if you asked how many pounds are in a gram, i wouldnt know, but I might well respond with "Why dont you google that?"

What is the capital of Albania ?

To be fair, maybe you know it, then replace that by the period of hyperfine transition in cesium. But that's an information that is 1-uncontroversial enough that any source that is not random bullshit will give the same answer and 2-available in a simple search. So why ask someone else, when he will most probably do the same that you just refused to do ?

If you can't be bothered to google it then you aren't really trying to find out.

johnmusacha

The capital of Albania is Tiranë.  I did not specifically know that before you asked, but I checked the globe sitting on my desk.  The globe is manufatured by a reputable map company and thus is more reliable than some random nonsense on the internet hotbots.

Thank you.

Also, to Ivan, nobody is being "lazy"; I prefer to ask people that know.  Those who rely upon the Google-hotbots are lazy.

I typed "capital albania" in google and got this :

https://www.google.com/search?q=capital+albania&rlz=1C1WZPD_enUS432&oq=capital+albania&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l5.4856j0j8&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8

Not only did I not have to buy a globe, but I even got the correct spelling.

ivandh

No Ubik, that is the spelling that evil internet bots use to spam your hard drive and poison your mind. A $12 spherical piece of paper is vastly superior.

johnmusacha

Wait.  Are you saying you don't own a globe?  Then what do you have on your desk to spin around while doing your megalomaniacal mastermind laugh?

Plus this globe was pretty freaking expensive, brah.

Ubik42

...a foreign capital with a pronouncable name...I should have guessed.

I have a wall map instead. It is very useful because with it I can easily find the Soviet Union.

Caesium makes you sick & grow too many fingers/toes.

Great.

Now, what was the political regime of said town in the year 1357 ? And what was its fiscal system ?

If you have a book about that without being an historian, or a friend that can answer that without researching first... you are a troll.

johnmusacha

I don't have any books on that at home, and I am a historian actually.  Then again, you are the one asking about Tirana in 1357, not me.  Find it out yourself.

netzach

Encylopedia Dramatica historian perhaps.

DiogenesDue

It comes down to perceived intent.  People don't like answering lazy users that could not be bothered to Google something but want someone else to spend time writing up an explanation.  If it is apparent they have spent time looking for the answer themselves before asking, most people don't have a problem with explaining.
