According to QI, it's not a Twain quote at all.

The way I heard it was, "a walk in the country, ruined by a little white ball."

Be that as it may, GEOCACHING is better than either of those other 2!

So did Mr Fry give us the source? And geocaching looks like orienteering for people who can't run or read maps

I wonder if Stephen Fry plays chess, if so, he might be on this site. He really is very intelligent, nice chap too. ;)

Nah, geocaching is not too similar to orienteering at all...and I don't run anyway, having broken my back in 2 places several years ago in a terrible m/c accident (it wasn't my fault either!).

What's so special about that comment?

I started playing both as a teenager - 55 years ago.  Been playing them both on and off ever since.  I love 'em both.  They're both great games.

But is it possible to say one is "better"  than the other?

. . . Other than it's the one I'm playing right now!

Quin_Nikita

chess.. Only tennis is better than chess

So how do you feel about squash?

I like it because it's available 24/7, you never lose a ball, and, just like chess, you can practice on your own

I tee off with the Queen,  putt with a pawn,  and use a Knight -naturally - to get outta the woods

I have play both and chess wins easily. For I can chess play 24/7 OTB or online human and computers. Never play the same game twice.  Chess is much cheaper or free to play.  Golf cost too much to play plus 4 hours just to a hit several times. As mention before golf is seasonal game and many poeple do not the discpline to play chess. I still feel that chess is best game on the planet.

I think to make chess more popular you will need to big time names to play such as Tom Cruise, Lebron James, Tom Brady, etc. If you get the appeal of celebrities the money will follow.

villan14

i think chess. :)

Golf takes a lot of discipline as well. People see Tiger Woods banging in rounds of 12 under and assume its easy. Getting good is extremely difficult and it takes a lot of concentration to play well.

They are completely different sports, and mainly require different skill sets, but concentration and discipline are definitely valid for both. Golf can be very mentally draining.

Also, 4 hours is if you aren't very good. Most decent golfers can play a round in maybe 2.5. Some chess games go on just as long.

The best I have ever done is bogey a few holes...it is much harder than it looks...

The Open Golf Champion gets nothing like 8 million pounds; more like $1.5 million or around 1 million pounds.

Have you ever played in America?

You'd be lucky to get round in 5 hours; slow play is the curse of golf in this Country.

Prize Money:

1. British Open

2. PGA Championship

2. Masters

2. U.S. Open

Prize money is basically a wash, with all four of the majors awarding $1.44 million to the winner. The British offers just a tad more, thanks to currency conversions.

Of course, all pros also have sponsors. The highest 48 golfers (based on total income) in 2012 made $5 million (USD) or more-and some of those don't even golf anymore (Nicklaus, Palmer).

chess,unless it's minigolf
