vacation rule unfair

I think the problem seems to me that you make a move in one game and then while you are studying another game for 2 days, the first opponent makes a move, so youve then got to make another move in the first game.... etc.

Why dont you save your moves up i.e. write them down rather than make them. Then the day before you go on vacation, log on, make all your moves one after another, taking a couple of minutes, then put youself on vacation.  If you are playing 7 day per move games, you would be pretty unlucky to get a move coming back at you in 2 minutes.

I've managed to go 'on vacation' now that I have only 6 active games as opposed to my usual 12 to 15.

My Problem now! I work for a homeless organisation which (at this time of the year) means that for a few days at a time over the next two weeks I will be too busy to play. However there will also be periods of a few days at a time when I am off duty and can play. I cannot totally plan these periods as I will be 'on call' as duty manager for part of this time - if something comes up I can be called in without much notice.

So..... do I stay 'on vacation' for the whole two weeks and miss out on some chess fun (and keep my current opponents waiting when they may have holidays and would appreciate the games)? Or do I go back off vacation and risk being timed out in some games if I can't make enough moves to ensure I can go back 'on vacation' when I need to?

I don't want to harp on about this. My experience of this site has been very positive and enjoyable and I appreciate there's alot of effort put in by the guys (& girls ?) who make it work. But this rule just doesn't make sense to me.

I havent been told I am too young in a few decades......THANKS !

I had one game in which I put my opponent in check, they had one legal move and the next move was mate so......did they resign or make the move and allow mate?!  NO !! They went on vacation!  A few days later they came back and STILL would not move nor resign, they timed out instead!  Its sad that such jerks as this make "rules" necessary to combat them and this type of behavior.

Reb you still won in the end... how does the impatience of a few overpower incovenience of the many???

I am not impatient but when I have mate in one and my opponent goes on vacation instead of resigning or moving so I can mate them thats an insult and is clearly abuse nof the vacation function. Perhaps if those of us who encounter such lowlife could simply complain in individual cases that are extreme ,like mine was, and have the game adjudicated as a win and not have to wait for the abuser to return it would solve problems? If I were impatient I wouldnt be playing this form of chess at all. Smile

Sounds reasonable to me.

What exactly is the vacation rule that everyone is whining about anyway? Where can I see the vacation rules?
jay

The rule everyone is complaining about is that we require that it NOT be your move in any of your games when you leave for vacation. This prevents the style of abuse you experienced Reb, where people would go on vacation without moving in any games they are losing in, then come back, move in all their games except the ones whey they are losing, then go back on vacation, etc. So any opponents they have that are winning their games (as you were) have to wait until all their vacation time is exhausted before they would get their wins. By forcing them to move in all of their games first, they can't stall all their losing games and continue to play all their winning games.

There may be a better way to address this, but this seemed fair. It doesn't seem like its too much to ask for people to make ONE move in all their games before going on vacation again. There are a few people who don't like it, but the majority seem ok with it.

Perhaps there is a better way, but we haven't figured it out yet, and nobody on this forum seems to have suggested a better way either. :) (That doesn't require 2000 lines of programming logic and a spaceship to the moon.)

TheOldReb
Good grief?! Thats what all the whining is about?!! Sounds perfectly logical and fair to me! How hard is it to make a move in each game and only then go on vacation? At one point I had more than 50 games going and had no problem making a move in each one every day and many times made lots of moves in many of the games. As for the "fast movers" simply tell them you are about to go on vacation and ask them not to respond right away to your move as you are trying to comply with the rules.

Exactly! People get their panties in a knot over nothing. Just let people use their vacation as they see fit.

On the other hand if the rule does in fact make the lives of most of the whiny old folks with wet pants more bearable, I guess, then so be it.

LOL

Is that how you think of your parents and grandparents?  Smile

TheOldReb
As I understand the vacation rule (that you must make a move in all games before going on vacation) it seems very fair to me. Whats the problem? Is there something I am missing?
TheOldReb
Chat less, move more......problem solved!

Is it the anonimity of the internet that encourages people to be so rude RetGuvvie98 ?

I don't believe I was whining. I think the rule is unfair and will mean, in my case, that I will play less games than I would like at any one time. Granted that inconvenience is not quite on a power with global warming!!!

Jay there was a suggestion from sstteevveenn (I think) earlier about being able to go on vacation but still having to play outstanding moves. You just wouldn't have to play any new moves. Is this possible or is this the suggestion you say would take too much programming?

TheOldReb
I think most people who need to make a sudden trip to the hospital arent gonna worry about games on chess.com myself, I know I wouldnt. Even if I time out in all games......so what? Every vacation I ever took was planned in advance and making a move in all my games would be no problem at all. I think only the abusers will whine about the current rule myself. Look at my game with spair75 for example....he only has 2 legal moves and is still milking the clock for no reason except to annoy me, he should have resigned long ago. I wont be surprised if when I am one or 2 moves from mating him he takes a "vacation". Oh, he is doing the same thing in about a dozen games, just look at the positions in which its his move. Smile

It should ....... be possible to go on vacation when it is your move to make in some games, but you still have to make your move in those games before your normal time limit.  Once you have made your moves in those games then they should join your other games as being 'on vacation'.  Otherwise it could be quite difficult to get all the games to be your opponent's move at the same time, if one or more are firing moves right back at you.  Then you would almost certainly blunder as you rush to get all your moves made before one person makes another move.

Sounds reasonable to me. If practicle to set up ofcourse.
