We are living in computer era

There wasn't computers back then and chess players had to find best moves and develop theories by thinking, reading, trying and spending years on noticing a mistake in 15 moves depth.

Now a simple, regular or even half brain kid can find and learn the best moves in given positions. Yet we have slowly progressing. top 10 elites are still from the previous generation.

Is conputers counter-productive? Has speed chess killed the Chess? That bugs the hell out of me.. why can I not learn faster with all those tools in my arsenal?

I'm also tired of seeing the same ten to fifteen people at all those tournaments.. world is that small?

we should rise and shine with all these technological advancement, exponentially more and more people should be in GM class now..

but..

And they found many "best" moves on their own so computers are not such a giant leap, just a refinement of what we already had.

Finding a move isn't very useful if you don't understand why the move is good... having a calculator doesn't make a person good at math.

And anyway, chess is a game where, most of the time, it's easy to tell that a good move is good. What makes chess hard is different. Chess is hard because bad moves look good too and tempt us into playing them. So being given a good move is often close to useless. You have to understand why the bad moves are bad, and why some good moves are not best.

Yet we have slowly progressing. top 10 elites are still from the previous generation.

Deep Blue beat Kasparov over 25 years ago. This is already the computer generation.

You can learn a lot faster than they did in the old days, but you have to do systematic work... work is difficult, it isn't, for example, watching videos... and clicking on things online is not systematic. You have to think (or be guided) about what to do, how to do it, and in what order... same for any skill really.

Don't be negative - I wouldn't know what was going on with chess besides the how the pieces move if this app wasn't available on phones. So you can expect the average chess player's skill to improve, since it costs a LOT less time/effort/money to improve from a basic level, and it's a lot easier to start a game at any time and find opponents. The computer can still beat the best players in the world, but hybrid teams of computer/human players still beat either the computer or human player alone. Now we just need to wait 100 years for the epic reign of the chess cyborgs... :tongue

paper lama, appreciate your reply but there are things still not fitting right.

knowing that there is a better move in a position gives you the opportunnity finding it. you wouldnt look for it unless you already knew or felt it somehow. in past that wasnt a thing, you'd have overlooked the presence of a better move easily.. but its not an option now. everyone has access that information thanks to engines.. then you can start realizing why it is a best move after that.

with that in hand why "we" are still inferior than our previous generation. see elites.. see old grandmasters. alireza is new but he has limits, magnus has already past his 30s.. so has the other tops. why isnt there 14yrs old new kids almost beating world champions.. like once magnus did with kasparov..

something is wrong with computers. they might make us lazy perhaps, or occupying minds with nonsense social media craps.. idk man i reaaly dont know.

I agree computer and internet gave us the opportunnity making practice more easily. I can even play in toilet on mobile, that's something i wont argue with.

But that makes the argument even stronger. with all the opportunnity we have, why we are not super advanced than previous generations? top10 and all them were raised with books and stuff. by playing on the board.

that is 'the question'.. that i'm already asking in fact.
