@DeepBlue is the oldest I've found so far, from May 14th, 2007. Can't say that member has or hasn't been staff though.

By May 18th, it looks like it may have left the original beta: https://www.chess.com/news/view/welcome-to-the-new-chesscom
So, that member likely was part of the beta.

Actually, nevermind that wasn't the post beta release note. It was still beta in June of 2007.

Yeah, understood. Just posting the date. May 14th was the first I found but can't tell if the member ever was staff (based on the archive of the site, I don't think the member was at that time)

Staff (and some mods?) can change your name, and you can request to have the name of a closed or long abandoned account.
So it's very likely the original @chess had its named changed, and the current @chess had their named changed to chess.
