What side of the chess spectrum are you?

Or, you could just say which side you lean towards a bit more? Or maybe in the middle?

There's room for all play types, and has been for a long time now. Classical chess will come back once it's physically possible to resume.

Neutral

I think both have their place, they're different games. I prefer slower strategic traditional chess but enjoy the occasional game of blitz. Online chess has brought millions of people into contact with the game who wouldn't otherwise ever play, not a bad thing even if it is a simple, unsophisticated version. This will probably help to keep traditional OTB chess alive and relevant in the internet age. 5.7

Old things are relevant, new things are not. Going back to Gilgamesh written on clay tablets.

I'd rather bring a glock than a longsword to a fight.

For me, 90% conservative.

It would be interesting to know the division of liberal/conservative based on age. I would not be surprised it <25 are mostly liberal and >25 are more likely to be conservative?

Hikaru is liberal I think so... he is 32

Why would the younger generation prefer longer time controls? We have the attention span of a goldfish

True, but my comment was meant more for the non God like players found on this and other sites.

I don't know what to think. Because I love online chess, it actually got me into it. None of my friends think chess is cool, so it's fun to play with people who enjoy it. However, if I have the opportunity to play over the board chess, I choose that ten times out of ten. As for it becoming an esport... we already have in-person chess tournaments, so it's not like we are lacking competition. And... nobody would really pay attention to the Esport. Esports, in general, are shunned, ad I think that while the chess community may get hyped up when it starts, the hype won't last. So I guess I'm 50-50.

For me if it becomes an esport I get a disadvantage cuz of my bad net

Recently due to a number of factors, including COVID-19, there has been an explosion in popularity of internet chess.

Internet chess exploded during the America Online CD-ROM days back in the analog telephone line modem days with Yahoo Chess, about 25 years ago.

Online chess was conceived back in the Tandy Radio Shack 1980 computer (TRS-80), in this promotional comic book, (I had the other one with Superman and Wonder Woman).

About 40 years ago. Incredible. Everything came true.

If you look closely at that chessboard on the computer screen, you'll notice the king and queen are on the wrong squares

Great question! Don't think chess should be an esport, but definitely am liberal leaning on this scale. Biggest liberal aspect would be the faster time controls. 6hr games are just insane to me
