gm hikaru
who is best chess player

yeah but other chess players are slowely climbing the rank and getting really close to magnus
Yeah, Hikaru slowly climbed from number 2 to number 3. Logical to say he's the best.

Magnus often loses to GMs(not talking about Super GMs).
If Magnus lost "often" to low-rated GMs, his rating would plummet and his world ranking would suffer.
But Magnus has been the top-ranked player in the world, uninterrupted, for over 12 years now.
It might feel like he gets beaten frequently, but he really doesn't. We just hear about his classical losses in every chess media outlet whenever they happen, because it's so unusual to ever see him lose ...
Currently definitely Magnus, look at the FIDE rankings for further proof, for the best player ever you can make a case for Kasparov in his prime, but right now, it is Magnus.

Carlsen has been on top of that list for more than 10 years. Does it answer your question?
Define 'best'? Kasparov (longevity of dominance in modern times), Carlsen (people are just playing better in the Stockfish era becase they have learned better openings and he is probably playing the objectively most accurate chess in history; he's probably also the best endgame player in history), Fischer (absolute dominance at a point in time), Tal (for his brilliancies), Capablanca (absolute dominance for an extended period against what were, in hindsight, fairly weak competitors) are all best in response to a different meaning of best.
Exactly. Also, each player had different type of competition. Before engines, someone with good prep like Kasparov could get devastating attacks out of the opening. With engine prep, we often get to endgames straight from prep, where Magnus shines.
