Why am I losing a game for abandonment?

I just lost a game for abandonment. How?

I did not disconnect. I did not lose internet service. What gives? IF I have a 10 minute clock and over 4 minutes left on the clock, how do I lose for "Abandonment"?? Is it a 10 minute game or not?

I have had opponents let a clock run down over 8 minutes of a ten minute game when they were in a doomed to lose position, but they didn't lose for abandonment. I had to wait 8 minutes for a win I earned and now I lose a game while the clock is still running?

What the heck?

I want that reversed.

Long move timer

The last, and little known way to time out is if you are still connected, but take a very long time to make one move.

This can only happen before 10 moves are made in the game. After 10 moves, you can use as much time as you like on any move, but before ten moves are made if you use more than 50% of the main time on one move, you will be considered to have abandoned the game.

Examples:

Bullet 2 | 1: Half of 2 minutes is 1 minute, so if you took more than 1:00 on a single move before the tenth move, you would be considered to have abandoned the game.

Blitz 5 | 5: Half of 5 minutes is 2:30, so if you took more than 2:30 on a single move before the tenth move, you would be considered to have abandoned the game.

Rapid 15 |10: Half of 15 minutes is 7:30, so if you took more than 7:30 on a single move before the tenth move, you would be considered to have abandoned the game.

Well, that's a Ridiculous rule. My CHILD needed attention unexpectedly, I didn't abandon anything.

Ridiculous. It seems like this is a bug that needs fixing.  After 10 moves any unethical jerk can make you wait 8 minutes for a win you earn, but before 10 moves you get random loses even though you didn't abandon anything. What genius thought of this rule?

What happened to you is unfortunate but I think the rule is very useful overall.

Thousands of games used to be abandoned every day. I remember giving up rapid games entirely after sitting around waiting a number of times.

Hundreds of members complained.  The problem was how to help a computer figure out when a game was abandoned.

I think the long move timer was made applicable to any move  but some people complained that they had the right to a long think in a complex position.

So it was pared back and now only applies to the first ten moves. Most people don't spend half of the game time on one move in the opening.

I think you might be putting too much importance on winning. Just move on.

I agree that a game should not be abandoned. It has just happened to me.

my opponent took 3 minutes to move before the 10th move I got up and moved away for a minute and the game was abandoned

brmk91

same happened to me a few times, i lost wifi connection for like 10 seconds and game said i abandoned and lost when it came back..

in 10 min games i should have 1 minute disconnection timer but things don't go as planned sometimes.

developers should look into this, but they probably won't.. so nevermind

yep. today i lost 30 points from two games where noone moved a piece. thank you chess com

I have just won a game against an opponent (apparently from India) who became disconnected or abandoned the game. He was taking a lot of time over some moves (the game ended at move 10) but it is also possible his Internet connection failed.

the abandonment rule is way too aggressive. Disconnect for all of 5 seconds and you forfeit the game. If someones internet even momentarily dips, thats an automatic loss. Most modems need a good 30 seconds to reboot at minimum.

this is just ridiculous

it happened to me twice over the last two days

this one i would clearly win on time

whats going on
