I really don't know. It's sad.
Why are people closing their accounts
Yeah. So what? It's sad that people are losing interest in chess. I closed for personal reasons.
But why do they need to close it if they might return someday
I am seeing more and more closed accounts now and they are quite frequent. They are closed for inactive and the title speaks for itself
People come and go...
TheNameofNames is correct. Before a player’s account is closed for violating fair play rules, they get notified by chess.com that their account is under investigation. I’ve played against several individuals here who this happened to. They usually quickly close the account themselves (it’s like resigning before you get fired) and then they quickly open another account and the cheating begins all over again. This one guy’s account was on the verge of being closed, and this had happened to him multiple times, so he quickly offered a draw in our game.
I knew exactly what was happening, so I didn’t accept the draw. He was waiting for me to give him a draw, and his account was closed while he waited for that. Too funny!

So the others didn't close it for personal reasons?
Easy, cheaters are dramatically incrementing their presence. What is sad is that we don't know if we're playing a cheater or not. They have resources to mimic human moves, even committing some blunders here and there.
On the other hand, there're many supporters of Niemann also closing their accounts, just because they consider chess.com has acted with negligence on this matter.
But the fight between Niemann and vs rest of the world will come to an end sooner or later. What will never end is the act of cheating. Lots of young people play online chess like video games. They don't consider using an engine as a cheat. It's just an aid to get a better rating.
