Why Are Points So, Uh, Pointless?

Yes, I realize this question has been asked many times. Yes, I know that points are a measure of how "sociable" you are on chess.com. What I don't get is why we have them. So it shows that you are active in the forums. Big deal. It's a chess website, not Facebook. Why do we need "point"less "points" to show something so irrelevant? I know some may disagree, but I'm just stating my opinion.

Now, if points could be used for a practical purpose, then that would be ideal. For example, if you get 25,000 points, you get a free Gold month for example, or something like that. That may not be the best example, as something like that would attract spammers. But what if there were a points leaderboard or something? There could be a percentile ranking for them just like there is for Online Chess. Other examples include a tee shirt for a certain amount of points, or a chess.com memorabilia something-or-other, stuff like that.

Thoughts?

I think staff used to give out a t-shirt or something when you hit a certain amount of points, but they discontinued that because of spammers. Don't quote me on this though, I'm not sure.

Regarding your question, they are as you described them. An activity meter of sorts. There wasn't an intended point beyond that. I agree though, the concept could be built off of in some way.

You may find this to be a very (un)helpful guide.

LOL. I enjoyed that, nice.

I think it helps the group members to judge if you are active or not, not a great explanation. I mean, what else could be the 'point' of the point system

It's pointless.

Shivsky

Probably some half-a## metric used by chess.com to measure member engagement + participation.  Helps them more than it helps us.

Half-@$$3D?

Well it is evidently not helping any user now, is it?  Might as well keep the point-count internal.

With "ascendancy" type models like SE/SO (Stack Exchange), you actually do get priviledges + rights with the points you earn.   In this model, it is apparently just for show.

but everything is more fun when you get points!

To quote the commerical, they are "half-fast".

The_Ghostess_Lola

....you bring up a good point. In my point of view, ppl miss the point even when you say it point blank. B4 you know it, you reach a turning point - like a point of no return ?....just pointing this out. Case in point: I don't wanna belabor the point, but some have a low boiling point & subsequently reach a breaking point. So, what's the point of doing it when they miss the point ?....like you say - it's probably pointless.

Anywayz, you're point's well taken and you deserve some brownie points....Tongue Out....

Never realized there are points here... Cool, I have 227! :-)
