maybe because they are mature adults unlike patzers and me?
Why Aren't Titled Players More Active In The Forums?
First of all... most people who are titled players got it after only a few years... because they started as kids... meaning a few things
1) Most of them aren't studying / improving anymore.
2) Most who are studying are kids i.e. goofy and energetic.
If you mean some aspiring professional player who is 2600 FIDE and 16 years old, sure, maybe they have very little social life, but that's gotta be something like 20 people in the whole world out of millions of players.
What a weird assumption, considering you don't have experience being one of those players.
Nah, and you're a good example of what I'm saying.
Am I? Another assumption. You don't even know my age, or what my life entails.
Your profile gives stuff away even if you don't think it does...
Also your ratings are low for an NM, so if you're a rusty adult that also fits what I'm saying...
But do I study?
My point was NMs aren't shy nerds who study 10 hours a day and don't know how to socialize... that's what peg was saying and I disagreed. You seem to be young and I'm guessing you don't mind joking around... if I'm wrong and you're a socially awkward nerd then just say so
Your assumption of 2 types of titled players is what I meant. You also seem to be young based on your username. Oh and you are correct. I am a "socially awkward nerd."

You're participating in the forums anyway
with much wit and flair, I'll add! 👑
I'm confused, @kracker12345, so you are disagreeing about the 2 types of titled players, but what's the objection in particular?

I'm not an NM so it doesn't matter how old I am.

I would guess that either kracker is a kid who doesn't really study, or a middle aged NM who does study.
It was a generalisation by Unicorn, though I don't think they were actually saying there are strictly only 2 types of titled players, but we can dissect it.
- Most NMs getting the title as teens because they started as kids... True, but is more true now than it used to be. So quite a few NMs do exist who got the title as adults.
- Most NMs have given up on studying/improvement... Not sure whether this is the case. Perhaps most NMs who are also adults have accepted the common wisdom that if you're going to become an IM or GM, it probably needed to happen before you turned 30. I'm not sure what % of NMs still living today have given up chess, but I do imagine that the vast majority of those who continue with it long term are the ones who got their NM title as kids or teens, since they have more potential. Or, at least, older people are told that we don't have much potential.
- This would support the second conclusion that most NMs who are studying are kids, but I'd extend that to kids, teens and early 20s.
Unicorn's point was that the stereotype of titled players being nerdy, bookish, unsocial and not the witty type, and therefore not active in forums, doesn't make sense because those who are still bookish (studying) are statistically very likely to be kids (full of beans and very prosocial), and those who aren't kids are mostly not bookish anymore, so even if they're not active in the forums that's not because they're busy studying.
I get unicorn's point (well, unicorns have the best points don't they) but I didn't understand why kracker wanted to object to it; maybe im missing something but i did not quite see what was objectionable about the categories even if they did not fit well.

Yeah not really sure. I do gather that they're young, almost certainly a teenager, and they do see themselves as a nerd with not much of a social life, rather than as a hyperactive child prodigy type? But the fact that they're chatting in the forums does still support that despite being bookish they're not unsocial, and personally I don't think that they're low in wit either, so they do go against Peggy's stereotype.
Storm in a teacup, probably
Hmmmmm nerdy with not much social life doesn't seem to conflict with chatting a lot in the forums....idk i mean I like stuff like CS theory and disappearing from humans for extended periods of time ![]()

The internet 2.0, once again blurring the boundaries between social interaction and social isolation
Oh right, i guess there are humans on here as well as animals and desserts.
And trolls!
hiiiii yeah did you not consider your kind a part of the animal kingdom?
That's only in Skyrim
Also what do you mean assumptions, as if I don't see NMs IRL and at OTB tournaments...
You don't know what they do in their free time though. Also you are generalizing the whole of titled players.
In general titled players started young... the higher the rating, the younger they started... Carlsen said he started late because he was already 8 so he hard to work hard to catch up...
