Why did I lose this blitz chess game? Rules question

Hello! I'm new to playing chess online and just tried out a few blitz chess games. I think I must not understand the rules of blitz chess. I had 12 points more material than my opponent when my timer timed out, but apparently I lost the game? I'm not sure exactly how one wins blitz chess. Is it that you have more material when your timer runs out? Is there something you need to press to indicate you want to end the game before the timer runs out? I tried looking up an answer to this question but didn't have any luck. This is an earnest question, I apologize if it's silly! Thank you.

The clock is part of the game.  You run out of time, you lose the game.

So then how do you win? Do you have to capture the king?

IMKeto

You win by any of the following:

Checkmate

Resignation

Time out

I see... Thanks for the info. So someone can be way behind in material but win just by waiting out the other player?

Material/point total is irrelevant at your level (No Offense).  But if youre new to the game?  Playing speed chess is a HORRIBLE way to play.  You are not giving yourself time to think, and it instills bad habits.  Now if you're playing just to have fun?  Then ignore what i said.

Here is how you could have won the game by checkmate in 3 more moves.

And you win because the king has no square to escape attack.
